I would describe my skin as combo-oily, prone to the odd breakout and on the wrong side of 30! I never used to care much for my skin during my twenties, I would cleanse and slap on a moisturiser morning & night – that’s it. No anti-aging serums, no cleansing oils, no eye creams, no exfoliators, no face masks and no hydrating facial mists. When I reached the ripe age of 30 a couple of years ago, I noticed my skin was in dire need of some TLC. Plagued by constant breakouts, a super oily T-zone and clogged pores – I decided to do something about it. On my 30th birthday, I decided enough was enough and expanded my skin care routine. I went for a fabulous Dermalogica facial and there was clarity (almost like having a near-death experience… *dramatic much?*). I was in awe of all the products the Skin Care Therapist used on my skin during the facial and instantly fell in love with 2 particular Dermalogica products.
Fast forward 2 years and my skin has undergone a total 180 – breakouts are few & far between, my skin is looking a lot less congested and my T-zone is actually not that oily anymore (unless it’s a scorcher of a day).
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, you will know how much I love Dermalogica – they are a cruelty-free brand that is constantly investing time & money to create the best & most innovative products for your skin. There are 2 Dermalogica products that really stand out to me, and I’m happy to call them must-haves in any skin care routine (whether you have dry, oily, normal or even sensitive skin) because they are just THAT good.
As mentioned above, my skin can definitely be described as ‘high maintenance’. Enter, the mighty Dermalogica PreCleanse (I actually mentioned it in a monthly favourites blog post here). This is a natural & lightweight cleansing oil that contains Vitamin E, Olive- and Apricot kernel oils. It works to gently lift dirt, grime, waterproof makeup, sunscreen and other nasty impurities, making it easier for your favourite cleanser to do its job – efficiently & effectively! Remember: Like dissolves like, so using a cleansing OIL as the first step in your skin care routine will not only remove your makeup but will also gently melt away excess sebum (perfect for oily-skinned gals).
Kukui nut-, Borage seed- and Rice bran oils (fortifying agents) are water soluble & non-comedogenic, plus they help prevent excess moisture loss. If too much sebum is stripped (using skin care products that are too harsh), your oil glands will simply produce more than what is required to replace whatever had been lost. And that could be a reason why you are struggling with oily skin.
Conditioning Rice bran- and Vitamin E oils make this a gentle blend that is sensitive enough to be used around the eye area.
Here’s how I use PreCleanse:
I dispense a teaspoon amount into my dry hands & massage all over the skin (don’t dampen your face beforehand) concentrating on the areas where makeup and congestion are heaviest. I then wet my hands to create a light, milky emulsion & continue massaging it into skin. Rinse with lukewarm water and follow with my regular cleanser.
It is SO gentle on the skin, and yet manages to banish panda eyes & all other traces of makeup. My skin feels soft, supple, refreshed and best of all – comfortable.
The photo you see above is a travel sized bottle I received in a press pack, I’ve already been through one full size & one other travel size & will be repurchasing a full size soon.
Hero product no. 2: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. Cult favourite among many, and with good reason! This is my ultimate holy grail skin care product – if there’s one Dermalogica product I ALWAYS recommend to family, friends & readers it’s this bad boy. I’ve mentioned it on the blog quite a number of times because it has truly changed the way I look at skin care. I’ve been using the Daily Microfoliant for almost 2 years now and I get excited every single time I use it.
This unique Rice-based powder formula activates when it comes in contact with water & releases Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, leaving skin smoother and brighter. It is a very gentle skin polisher that rids the skin of ‘dulling debris’ and dissolves excess surface cells (and as the name suggests, it can be used on a daily basis). Licorice- and grapefruit extracts then get to work to help the skin look brighter & more radiant, plus will also help even out skin tone and pigmentation over time. A super-soothing blend of Green Tea, Ginkgo and Colloidal Oatmeal helps to calm the skin, leaving it feeling soft & smooth.
I wouldn’t call this a scrub, it’s more of a buffing product because it is so gentle on the skin. Just add a small amount of water to the Daily Microfoliant to create a foamy paste, work it into the skin using circular motions, avoiding the eye area. After about 20 seconds of massaging, rinse off & you’re done!
A full size 75g container of Daily Microfoliant will last you absolute ages – I only use about half a teaspoon of powder at a time. I’ve had my current container for well over a year and although I don’t use it every single day (maybe 2 or 3 times a week), there is still A LOT of product left.
Both the PreCleanse and the Daily Microfoliant smell absolutely amazing – slightly herby, almost like that ‘I’m-getting-a-facial-at-the-spa’ scent. These are also formulated without artificial fragrances and colours – this means breakouts will be kept to a minimum and sensitivity will not be aggravated. PreCleanse retails for R 520,00 (150ml) and the Daily Microfoliant retails for R 850,00 (75g) – both are available at Dermalogica Concept Stores, Sorbet salons and selected beauty salons nationwide (take a look here to find your nearest stockist).
