Remember when Neal (the husband) wrote a review on a men’s product earlier last year? I thought he did a really great job (you can take a look at the blog post here), and he has been looking forward to doing another review for a while but just hasn’t had the time. A couple of weeks ago Vaseline contacted me, and asked whether Neal would be interested in putting their Vaseline MEN Extra Strength Lotion to the ultimate 5-day test. Neal and I chatted about the campaign, and both of us thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do another ‘The Husband Review’ blog post.
As mentioned in the very first blog post of this series, this review isn’t just for men to read. I created the series to give my female readers an insight into how a specific product might work for their boyfriend, dad, brother, husband, friend, son or uncle.
The words you see below are straight from the horse’s mouth, I didn’t edit / add anything. I really think Neal did a great job with his review, and I know he would appreciate feedback and / or words of encouragement. If you enjoyed this blog post, please be sure to let him know in the comments section below – as with the previous review, he’ll be the one replying to all the comments.
Without further ado, let me hand the mic over to Neal:
I think it has been a year since the last ‘The Husband Review’, which does not reflect very well on my commitment towards Pink Peonies. It’s not that I have no interest in contributing to the blog, I do, but it is mainly behind the scenes making things, providing moral support or just a listening ear when Luzanne needs a soundboard.
Today I am back, to share with you another product review, from a male perspective.
At this point I should remind you that I am the polar opposite of Luzanne. When we met, I used to use a 3-in-1 hair product(shampoo, something and conditioner) because it meant I didn’t have to waste much time washing my hair. It made sense to me at the time that I was getting a lot done (3-in-1) with just one wash :)… Fast forward a few years… I still don’t enjoy faffing around with products, BUT, I have grown to appreciate a good product, and then it generally sticks around for a while.
So this leads me to the product at hand. Vaseline Men Extra Strength Body Lotion.
The first impression when I opened the lid was that it has a very pleasant fragrance. Pleasant in that it is not overly flower-ly, rather fresh and almost cologne-like. The container is supple enough to squeeze out the lotion with ease. It is also very nice to have a larger container, which I keep in the bathroom, as well as a smaller one for travelling which I tend to do rather frequently lately. Whether it be a weekend away or a multi-day mountain bike stage race, you don’t want or necessarily have space to pack everything you want to, so a smaller container saves me having to decant some of the lotion myself.
In my hands,
…the lotion has a thick consistency, unlike most lotions I have used which tend to be more liquid. It applies well and does not leave your hands feeling greasy which is important to me. I find many other body lotions leave you feeling like you need to wash your hands to get rid of the film it leaves on your hands, with Vaseline’s Men Extra Strength Body Lotion, I did not have this problem.
On my skin,
…I don’t apply body lotion on a regular basis. I’m super lazy and don’t really feel the need to add this to my daily routine.
However… Since I am a cyclist and predominantly ride my mountain bike, I am exposed to wind, dust, mud and most importantly… Sunlight!
On weekends we ride for 4 to 6 hours at a time and the elements can have a very damaging effect on your skin if not looked after properly. I also choose to shave my legs for a number of reasons, which leaves the skin feeling dry and itchy. So all of this has meant I HAVE to moisturise.
To take care of this I generally only apply body lotion twice a week. Once directly after shaving, and again on the weekend after a long ride in the sun, dust and wind to soothe the dryness.
The lotion absorbs impressively fast and entirely, leaving little to no trace of a greasy substance on the surface of your skin. I applied the lotion to my legs and could immediately get dressed without having to wait for the lotion to absorb. Another notable impression was that the following day my legs still felt moisturised, even after a morning shower, and that was after only one application. This is great, because it means I don’t have to apply it daily, which suits my laziness perfectly!
Vaseline refer to a BLUESEAL Petroleum Jelly, which is said to deeply restore your skin within 5 days. I did not need to apply it for that long to notice the results. With this in mind, I can honestly tell you that Vaseline Men Extra Strength Body Lotion, really is extra strong! It is now my go-to body moisturiser, as it provides everything I expect and need from a body lotion.
The Vaseline MEN Extra Strength Lotion retails for R29,95 (200ml) 0r R49,95 (400ml) at pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide. The 400ml size is currently on sale at Dis-Chem for R29,95 here.
P.S. It’s me, Luzanne. Okay, so Neal didn’t want to say the body lotion has a masculine scent because he thought my readers would think he’s silly for saying that. He said: “Obviously it smells like a man.” So, I thought I’d just quickly pop in here to tell you that the lotion has a very nice masculine scent (almost like a high-end cologne). Most of my readers already know I love unisex fragrances and masculine body washes (I use Neal’s stuff all the time), and I must admit: I’ve been using the Vasline MEN Extra Strength Lotion non-stop lately. It just smells so fresh and clean!
