This blog post is way overdue, I know, but I had other blog posts that I wanted to get up before my monthly favourites blog post and then at some stage, it just completely slipped my mind. I contemplated skipping my ‘September 2014 Favourites’ blog post because we are almost halfway through the month already, but my OCD tendencies just wouldn’t let me. There are also quite a few products that I really enjoyed using last month, and they definitely deserve a blog post dedicated to them…so here we are. Better late than never is what I always say! So without further ado, let’s take a look at the gems for the month of November.
We are slowing edging towards Summer, and so I am in full preparation mode… I have been exfoliating religiously lately because I will be self-tanning a lot soon. I have already self-tanned once (about 2 weeks ago) but I noticed the self-tanner did not blend very well (and I was left with patches) and that tells me my skin was still too dry and I did not exfoliate well enough beforehand. The Body Shop Honeymania Body Scrub as always been my favourite body scrub and I picked up this new tub just the other day because I finished every last smidgeon of my last tub about 2 weeks ago. There’s nothing quite like a brand spanking new container of a product you just know you love… I love this body scrub particularly because the scent is so darn amazing and it’s not too abrasive either. It does a good job of exfoliating the skin – it removes dead skin cells very well and leaves the skin feeling soft & smooth (without any type of oily residue).
On the days when I really feel like a pick-me-up, I’ll follow this up with my Honeymania body butter AND my Honeymania Eau De Toilette – there are certain scents that just make me smile whenever I catch a whiff of them, and the Honeymania range is definitely one of them. The Honeymania Body Scrub retails for R 140,00 at The Body Shop stores.
And while we’re on the subject of exfoliation, my lips have been loving the LUSH Bubblegum Lip Scrub lately. Well, they have always loved the LUSH lip scrubs but it’s been a while since I’ve used the bubblegum flavour one. I have used Popcorn, Sweet Lips, Santa (Christmas collection) and Bubblegum and the latter is by far my favourite flavour. It’s pink, it’s a bubblegum flavoured sugar, and it gets rid of all the pesky little flakes on the lips – what’s not to love? I featured this little lip scrub in my Cape Town Haul video here, if you would like to take a look.
Just scoop out a tiny bit with your index finger and then run the sugar scrub all over chapped lips to remove the dead skin. You can then either lick your lips or rinse with water (whatever floats your boat), and you will be left with smooth lips that are ready to rock a bold, matte lipstick! I have been wearing my Revlon Sultry Samba lipstick quite often lately (it’s a great dupe for the limited edition MAC Kelly Yum Yum lipstick), it’s super bright and super matte (yet slightly creamy) and uneven skin on the lips is a BIG no-no when it comes to these types of lippies. LUSH Bubblegum Lip Scrub retails for R 95,00 and is available in-store, as well as online here (but it is out of stock online at the moment – boo!).
Just a quick note: LUSH South Africa recently lowered their delivery costs (hurraaah!) – all parcels up to 2kg pay R 45,00; all parcels with a weight of between 2kg & 4kg pay R 60,00 and all parcels with a weight of more than 4kg pay R 90,00.
During the month of September I visited my hair stylist at Gary Rom and on my go-ahead, she chopped about 2cm off the ends of my hair. Now that my ends are in tip top shape, I want to keep them that way while taming the frizz (my hair always gets an extra ‘oomph’ of frizz as soon as the weather starts getting warmer).
The Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Frizz Remedy treatment has been a life-saver lately and the best part? It does its job (really well, if I might add!) in 3 minutes flat! This hair treatment contains aloe vera and Australian jojoba seed oil to put the moisture back in my hair, it tames frizz, adds shine and smells incredible. The scent reminds me of a mix between those old-school troll dolls and bubblegum – it really is intoxicating. I’ve been looking for a shampoo & conditioner (or treatment) that leaves my hair smelling delicious (not like a wet dog) and I have found that in this range from Aussie. The practical packaging also gets an A+ from me, as it doesn’t have a lid / cap – just squeeze the bottle & the treatment squirts out from the bottom (it is still travel-friendly and will not leak).
Top Tip: Apply this treatment from mid-length to the ends of your hair and only use what is left on your hands to run through the top of your head (this is a deep conditioning treatment so applying a blob to your roots will weigh them down).
If you haven’t sniffed anything from Aussie, do yourself a favour and go sniff a bottle of shampoo or conditioner – guaranteed you won’t be able to walk out of the shop without picking up 1 or 2 products in the range! The Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Frizz Remedy treatment retails for R 99,99 at Clicks stores.
Another hair care product I have been loving lately (and I’m very surprised I haven’t mentioned this in a previous monthly favourite) is the Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press thermal protectant. I first heard about this product from MakeupByTiffanyD (I say that like I know her personally – haha!) and didn’t expect it to be available in SA, but then earlier this year I was very happy to see it sold in the Retail Box online store (I immediately placed an order). Hot Off The Press is a heat protectant that you use before using any type of heat tool on your hair, BUT it’s not just any type of thermal protectant – this one is an aerosol. It disperses a super light mist (like a hairspray) and that’s what I love most about it, it feels like I’m getting less product on my hair and like is spreads over a wider area of my hair too. Also, not only does it protect your hair against heat damage but it also locks in your style (makes your curls, or whatever style you are creating, last longer). This has been the only heat protectant spray I have been reaching for lately, mostly because it really does make my style last longer.
Hot Off The Press is available from Retail Box for R 250,00.
Announcement: The second Retail Box #RBSecretBox is coming! The second box will be available for purchase either this week or early next week (I will keep you guys updated) – the theme is inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month, valued at over R 950,00 – plus the box will be suited for colour treated hair. FIVE full-sized products will be included in this pink-inspired box and it will retail for R 199,00.
I have been raving about the Stila Eyes Are The Window palette in Spirit to anyone who will listen to me – if you would like to check out my full review (with swatches) of this palette, click here. If you are someone who prefers neutral eyeshadows but also likes to play around with pops of colour, this is the palette for you. If you are someone who prefers warm-toned eyeshadows but still likes to play around with a cool-toned eyeshadow look every now and again, this is the palette for you. And if you are someone who loves shimmery shadows (in various intensities) on the lid, but prefers a matte crease shade and matte brow bone highlight shade, then this is the palette for you. The Stila Eyes Are The Window Palette in Spirit is such a multi-functional eyeshadow palette, it has definitely been my most reached for palette lately (September and October).
I actually just created a makeup look using only this palette today and my ‘Face Of The Day’ blog post on that look will be up next week. The Stila Eyes Are The Window Palette retails for R 495,00 at selected Woolworths & Truworths stores, as well as online at Zando.
Last but certainly not least, we have the new Sorbet 2-in-1 Serum Mask. I received a parcel from Sorbet about a month ago which included their new nail polish removers as well as the new 2-step face masks. I have really been enjoying the salon pump on the nail polish removers but the products that really stood out to me are the new sheet masks. I have always loved their sheet masks, and I’m quite surprised to see I haven’t mentioned them in a monthly favourites blog post before, because they are so unique. Sheet masks are not that readily available here in South Africa (especially not Korean sheet masks) and when Sorbet (a drugstore brand) released these a couple of years ago, I was really excited!
So, this feature of the new 2-step face masks from Sorbet also includes an honorary mention of the original sheet masks from Sorbet because I have been purchasing them ever since they were launched and I still love using them to this day.
So the new sheet masks basically work the same as the original ones, but there’s one additional step – you apply a serum to the skin before you place the sheet onto the face. The sheet mask contained in the lower part of the packaging is still wet, so you’re getting a double dose of fruit & vegetable extracts. Neither the serum, nor the sheet mask have a noticeable fragrance (the sheet might have a tiny bit of fragrance but it really is hardly noticeable) and I love this because I have become a lot more conscious of using fragranced skin care products on my face recently (my skin has become quite sensitive in that it breaks out when products are too heavily fragranced).
The green variant of these Sorbet masks contains extracts of kiwi, aloe, broccoli, blueberry, sweet almond seed & spinach, among other ingredients and I find after leaving this face mask on for 20 minutes, my skin is left feeling clarified and restored. I also apply the serum that is left over, to my neck and décolletage area, as those are the areas that show true age first. The new 2-Step Serum Masks from Sorbet retail R 49,95 at Clicks stores & Sorbet salons.
Top Tip: These sheet masks double up as a scary serial killer or elephant (wo)man mask perfect for Halloween coming up! I think I’ll put one of these on in the middle of the night on the 31st and wake Neal up while holding a flash light under my chin – haha!
We are leaving for Cape Town in just over 2 weeks – and I can’t wait!! We’ll be on holiday in Sea Point for 2 weeks and will be going down to Hermanus (or is it up?) for a couple of days as well. LUSH, Bubble Tea, Fairview, Forever 21 and Giovanni’s Deli World….eeep!! We’ll be driving down too, because Neal is doing the Wines2Whales mountain bike stage race, so there will be LOADS of space for me to bring lots of goodies back home from our trip. I feel a HAUL VIDEO coming up!
