Oh, the nostalgia… Remember the Lancôme Juicy Tubes that were a huge hit back in the 90s? Well, Lancôme has upped their beauty game and concocted these vibrant lip oil treatments that are inspired by both the cult classic Juicy Tubes, and one of the brand’s products from 1946, The Shaker. The Shaker was a gorgeous lipstick housed in a martini-shaker-shaped packaging – we all know the 1940s is now known as THE vintage decade when cocktails were very classy and voguish. You’ll see a very similar shape in the new Lancôme Juicy Shakers.
I think this is the most exciting beauty launch of 2016 so far! The new Lancôme Juicy Shakers combine the fun experience of the original Juicy Tubes, with new innovative packaging and a modern texture.
I feel like beauty girls all around the world have gone a bit loopy for the new Lancôme Juicy Shakers, so I put them to the ultimate test. I’ve been testing these beauties for the past 3 or 4 weeks for comfort, pigmentation, application, longevity, and wear. I’ll share my thoughts with you below, and will then move on to descriptions & swatches of all the shades in my current collection.
Lancôme South Africa were kind enough to send me 3 of the shades to try, and I loved them so much that I purchased 2 additional shades to add to my little collection. Initially the Juicy Shakers are extremely glossy (not sticky), but as they sink into the lips, the shine turns into a hydrating balm before disappearing completely to a subtle stain. I can wear these for a good 3 hours before I need to reapply – remember they are lip oils, so naturally they won’t last as long as a liquid lipstick or matte lippie. The darker shades (Walk The Lime, Good Kara-mel) stain the lips a bit more than the more subtle shades (Freedom Of Peach, Berry In Love) but all are very comfortable to wear.
Let’s take a closer look at the new Lancôme Juicy Shakers:
Once you unscrew the cap of your Juicy Shaker, you’ll find a very unique cushion applicator. Dabbing the sponge applicator onto the lips feels quite interesting – almost like a soft & dewy pillow. The conical shape was designed to perfectly fit the contour of your lips – you can either dab the pointed tip onto the lips (this transfers the most pigmentation), or you can swipe the slanted side of the applicator around the lips. I prefer pressing the tip onto my lips because it almost feels like it’s massaging my lips with a delicious oil.
You have to shake the cute cocktail shaker before use to combine the pigment (which settles at the bottom) and the oil. The packaging has a type of reservoir on the inside, with 3 holes that allow the pigmented oil to reach the cushion applicator. The applicator absorbs the perfect amount of product and what I like about it, is it doesn’t sit drenched in the actual lip oil. There are 2 steel beads inside the little bottle that help to blend the oil and pigments together, so it’s super quick & easy to mix the formulation.
Top Tip: Unscrew the lid and put it back into the reservoir, then give it a good shake. I have found this method saturates the applicator with just a little bit more with the tinted lip oil, which is enough to cover the entire lip area. You won’t have to keep dipping the applicator back in the reservoir to get more product if you use my little trick.
When you open the silver box your Juicy Shaker is housed in, you’ll probably find that the pigment has settled to the bottom of the bottle. Similar to the popular Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover, the Juicy Shakers have a bi-phase formula that combines nourishing peach seed oil (softens & nourishes), sweet almond oil (hydrates & restores), cranberry oil (an antioxidant that protects & restores the protective barrier of the skin due to its high content of Omega 3 and 6), muscat rose oil (regenerates & soothes) and high intensity pigments.
As mentioned earlier, all you need to do is shake it to combine the two, creating a delicious tinted lip oil. The Lancôme Juicy Shakers have a very smooth oily texture that melts on the lips, the pigmentation is quite sheer but definitely buildable to a medium level of pigmentation. These are technically lip oils that double up as a lipstick, gloss, and stain in one. You get the benefits of a non-sticky lipstick, the high shine from a lipgloss, and a subtle hint of a lasting colour from a lip stain.
I really love lip oils – they are healthy for the lips, super low maintenance, and they give your lips a youthful glow. I find the Juicy Shakers feel super comfortable, plus they are non-greasy and non-sticky. If, like me, you have perpetually dry lips, the caring and hydrating formula will help with flakiness while leaving behind a sheer wash of colour.
Top Tip: You can also use the Juicy Shakers as a glossy ‘topcoat’ for your lipstick.
For me, the best part about the Juicy Shakers are the shades…and of course, the flavours! Yum! Each of the 8 shades available in South Africa (20 shades globally) has a different aroma / flavour – most of them are vibrant and fruity, but there are unexpected (yet delectable) variants in the collection too. Each tint corresponds with its own unique, delicious scent and they also have cute little catchy names like ‘Apri-cute’ and ‘Good Kara-mel’.
I currently own 5 of the 8 shades available in South Africa, here is a description of each shade:
Freedom Of Peach ♥ I think this is my favourite shade because it smells so fresh and reminds me of Summer. It’s a beautiful sheer pastel peach that builds to a lovely soft pinky-peach shade on the lips. I honestly can’t get enough of the sweet fruity smell, and it makes me want to reapply it again and again throughout the day.
Walk The Lime ♥ A sparkling deep orange shade, flavoured with zesty lime. I must admit, the flavour / scent of this one isn’t my favourite – but only because it’s more of a fresh than a yummy scent.
Mangoes Wild ♥ Another favourite, this is a gorgeous bright pinky red shade with a delicate mango aroma. Lily Collins is one of the Lancôme brand ambassadors and this is her favourite shade.
Berry In Love ♥ A beautiful pinkish-purple shade with notes of berries. Lupita Nyongo is also a Lancôme brand ambassador and this is her favourite shade.
Good Kara-mel ♥ A praline brown with red undertones, this looks like the perfect Kylie Jenner shade in lip oil form. It contains teeny tiny micro shimmers (you can’t really see or feel them on the lips), which reflect the light and make your lips look really full and pouty. And every time I apply it, the scent makes my mouth water, it smells like a rich caramel dessert.
I’ve swatched all of the shades below so you can see the difference in pigmentation. You definitely don’t need ALL the shades, some of them actually look quite similar on the lips because they are so sheer. BUT if you are a beauty addict, then you definitely need at least one of these in your makeup collection.
The Lancôme Juicy Shakers retail for R270,00 each, and are available at your nearest Lancôme counter (Edgars, Red Square, Woolworths, Foschini, Stuttafords, Truworths) or in the Red Square online store.
One thing’s for sure, I have fallen head over heels in love with these tinted lip oils – they are the ultimate low maintenance lip product. I don’t have to worry about whether my lipstick will last throughout the day or whether my liquid lipstick is fading all patchy, these are so quick & easy to apply – you don’t need a mirror at all.
If a natural, pretty flush is what you’re after and you enjoy a subtle fruity fragrance, then the Lancôme Juicy Shakers are straight up your alley. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that once you try them, you’ll fall for them – hook, line and sinker.
P.S. I saw a swatch of Berry Tale yesterday, and I want it! *swoon* So, I’ll be placing an online order with Red Square again soon.
