Happy Tuesday, everyone! I’ve been waiting for the weather to get a bit more chilly before I published this blog post, beause today we’ll be taking a look at the essie Fall / Autumn 2015 collection. Technically speaking this is actually our Autumn 2016 collection here in South Africa, but the collection was released last year in the US as part of their Fall collection in 2015. I think I’ve explained it here on the blog before, but essie is a US-based brand and their seasons are the opposite of ours (when we have Summer, they have Winter etc). That’s why we sometimes either receive certain collections later in the year, or we might receive a Winter collection during Summer. It doesn’t happen that often, but it’s something to keep in mind.
This collection is called ‘Leggy Legend’ and here’s what essie has to say about it: “Taking center stage this season is iconic rock ‘n’ roll royalty: the queen of the entourage, the unstoppable, impossibly stylish muse. The 6 new compelling shades of the Fall 2015 collection capture the powerful allure of the ingénues of the rock era with intensely saturated hues.”
Doesn’t the collection remind you of falling leaves, crackling fireplaces, soft blankets and crisp cool Autumn nights?
I tried to be all edgy, so I took the nail polish photos with my black leather jacket as a backdrop. Don’t worry, no animals were harmed in the making of my leather jacket – it’s faux leather.
I hope you all enjoy the swatches but before we get started…did you know this collection is another Rebecca Minkoff collaboration? Oh yes, it’s inspired by the trendsetting style of 1970’s rock ‘n roll ladies like Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks.
The 6-piece collection boasts eye-catching shades of bronze, brick-red, oxblood, plum, indigo and espresso. As always, I already have my favourites in the collection and I’ll be sure to point them out to you. Let’s get started, shall we?
Leggy Legend – This little polish is the namesake of the collection. It is an interesting mix of copper, bronze and gold with an intense metallic finish. Depending on how the light catches it, it’ll be more bronze or more golden-copper. I must be honest, I’m not really a fan of this shade since it’s not a shade I would personally wear. I imagine it also won’t suit most skin tones, but I do think it will look stunning on someone with a dark skin tone. The swatch you see above is two coats with no top coat – it’s a little bit streaky with the first coat but evens out with the second.
With the Band – Now, THIS is a shade I can sink my teeth into! This shade is very trendy at the moment, it’s a dark brick red shade with a glossy shine. This shade reminds me SO much of Kathleenlights – if her ‘Miami Fever’ and ‘Havana Nights’ liquid lipsticks had a baby, this colour would be it. It’s such an Autumn appropriate shade, and it’s the very first shade I painted my nails with when I received the collection. Formula wise it’s a winner, you can definitely get away with just one thick coat but I’m a fan of two thinner coats – it helps everything stick (and wear) better (and longer). This is one of my favourite shades in the collection. In natural light, With The Band looks like a rich brick red, but in the dark it looks more maroon.
In The Lobby – This dark plum shade looks different in altered lighting, but for the most part it reminds me of dark berries and cherries. I’ve seen this shade in another essie collection before: It’s very similar to essie ‘Shearling Darling’ from the Winter 2013 collection, as well as essie ‘Bahama Mama’ (permanent collection). If you already own either of these nail polishes, then give ‘In The Lobby’ a skip! Unfortunately this particular polish is a bit difficult to work with – if you’re not careful it can be streaky and patchy, but once you have your 2 coats down, it looks incredibly shiny and stunning on the nails.
Bell-Bottom Blues – I love the name of this shimmery indigo blue. It’s an interesting polish in that it shifts from a deep cobalt blue to a midnight blue with turquoise shimmers in different light settings. The swatch you see above is 2 thin coats, you can get away with just one but then the shimmers aren’t as intense. Trust me, you want those aqua shimmers to pop – it’s what makes this polish so special. The inky blue undertone of this polish reminds me of essie Midnight Cami but Bell-Bottom Blues is a brighter and the shimmers are more turquoise than royal blue. In terms of formula, I have no complaints – but I found I had to apply a topcoat for the above swatch. Without it Bell-Bottom Blues look a bit dull, it needs a glossy topcoat to make those shimmers pop!
Color Binge – A beautiful, bright poppy red shade with a very glossy finish. I’ve seen this particular shade in another collection before, though, it’s twinning with essie ‘Sunset Sneaks’ from the Summer 2015 collection. Also, if you own essie Fifth Avenue then you probably don’t need to add this one to your current collection. This polish is a bit on the sheer side for me personally, the swatch you see above is 2 coats but you can still see through the swatch just a teeny tiny bit. In bright sunlight, Color Binge really pops and almost looks a bit neon. She’s a beaut, but unfortunately she gets a C for formula and originality.
Frock ‘n Roll – Another favourite in the collection, this shade is a mix of espresso and aubergine with the most fantastical silver and gun metal flecks of shimmer. It’s incredibly sexy, extremely shimmery and quite unusual and unique. Formula gets an A+, 2 thin coats will give you an intense blackened purply-brown that is saturated with shimmers. Just look at the bottle – it looks like there’s a tiny galaxy in there! Love!
There’s no denying this a very Autumn appropriate collection of nail polishes, but are the shades unique and interesting? Probably not. ‘Leggy Legend’ is definitely different, but as mentioned, I don’t think many skin tones will be able to rock it (no pun intended). ‘Frock ‘n Roll’ is a VERY special shade and I personally think the whole collection should have been named after it – the shade, the name, the flecks of shimmer…everything just screams rock ‘n’ roll!
The collection is already available at Dis-Chem stores (I saw it at my local Dis-Chem last week Friday) and if you’re in the market for 1 or 2 gorgeous Autumnal nail polish shades, then I highly recommend ‘With The Band’ and ‘Frock ‘n Roll’. Retail price is R 125,00 per bottle at selected Clicks, Dis-Chem and Foschini stores.
I cannot WAIT for the essie Winter 2015 collection to arrive – I’ve seen photos and swatches on Instagram and it’s absolutely stunning. If you’re keen to see what the collection looks like (as well as some swatches), click here. Absolutely, breathtakingly gorgeous… right?
Enjoy your public holiday tomorrow – what are your plans? I embarked on a decluttering project in my beauty room this past weekend, and almost started hyperventilating when I saw all the ‘stuff’ I have in there. There are so many products I have bought / have been sent to me that I want to feature on the blog but there’s just not enough time to write posts and take photos. I remember a story from my childhood called ‘The Elves And The Shoemaker’ (I’m sure you know which story I’m talking about, if not, you can read it here) – I need a couple of those elves to come visit me at night to help write blog posts and take & edit photos. Anyway, my point is: I’ll be spending tomorrow finishing up my decluttering project, and working on a blog post for Thursday. I’m quite excited about Thursday’s blog post because I have some rather exciting things to show you!
