Review & Swatches – CATRICE Lumination Collection

CATRICE Lumination Collection

You can’t deny the rose gold packaging of the new limited edition CATRICE Lumination collection looks luxurious, almost like the collection should be sold at Sephora.  If you’re a regular here on Pink Peonies, then you know I have an obsession with rose gold (any type of gold actually), so this new collection from CATRICE was right up my alley.  In fact, it’s so far up my alley, it’s past the alley, past the main street, past the suburbs and past the outskirts of Centurion.  CATRICE South Africa very kindly sent me most of the collection products about a week and a half ago, and a few days after I decided to pop in to Dis-Chem to purchase the rest of the collection.  I wanted to do a full review of the whole collection, and that’s what we’re chatting about today.

CATRICE really stepped up their game with the Lumination collection – great quality products, plus gorgeous packaging with budget-friendly price tags.  This is their Summer collection featuring shades of bronze, gold, pastel rose and pops of vivid pink.  The collection launched in November, and is still available at my local Dis-Chem (I checked this past weekend).  If you see something you like in this review blog post, you might want to get to Dis-Chem sooner rather than later because I’m sure it will be sold out very soon.

I’ll start with a trio of products that impressed me the most – their baked bronzer, baked highlighter and luminous blush.

CATRICE Lumination Flushed Fiction Blush Bronzer Luminous Light Highlighter

♥  Luminizing Bronzer in New Bronze Age (R 89,95) – This is a baked bronzer with a beautiful marble design.  I personally don’t use shimmery bronzers to bronze up the perimeters of my face, but I do love this warm-toned bronzing powder as a blush or an eyeshadow.  It is very shimmery, almost to the point of being metallic and I imagine it will look stunning on medium to dark skin tones.  If MAC Shaft Of Gold Mineralize Skinfinish (part of the new Magic Of The Night collection) and MAC Gold Deposit Mineralize Skinfinish had a baby, this would be it!  I like to apply this using my trusty Sigma F15 Duo Fibre Blush Brush, just because the pigmentation is intense and I prefer to start with a light application.

♥  Luminizing Highlighter in Luminous Light (R 89,95) – This is a baked shimmery highlighter with a neutral pink marble design.  Very, very similar to MAC Lightscapade Mineralize Skinfinish but a little bit more pink in tone.  This really is a great highlighting powder, it is so finely milled and the pigmentation is spot on as well.  I like to apply it to the tops of my cheekbones, tip of the nose and above my cupid’s bow to illuminate those areas of my face.  For a subtle glow, go with a fan brush like the Sigma F41 Fan Brush, for a more intense highlight (like a beacon of light, the kind Amrezy is known for) go with the Real Techniques Setting Brush.

♥  Powder Blush in Flushed Fiction (R 69,95) – This is a stunning rose gold shade, a mix between a warm nude and a muted pink.  When applied, it gives the cheeks a fresh and glowy flush.  This is the type of blush that you can pair with any type of makeup look, because it is so neutral.  The texture and formula is very smooth and blends like a dream, in fact it reminds me a lot of the Max Factor Creme Puff Blushes.  The pigmentation is also quite good, you can go as subtle or as intense as you want.  For a sheer wash of colour on the cheeks use a light hand and a makeup brush like the Real Techniques Blush Brush, and for a noticeable pop of colour use a heavier hand with a blush brush that is a bit more dense i.e. the Sigma F10 Powder Blush Brush.

Next up we have the 4 nail polishes in the collection, all of which are metallics.  My favourites are ‘Cosmic Pink’ and ‘Interstellar’.

CATRICE Interstellar

♥  Interstellar (R 61,95) – This looks like liquid metal in a bottle, it’s a captivating bronze with an almost rose gold undertone.  I always like to go through my nail polish collection whenever I do these reviews, to see if any of the nail polish might be dupes for high-end brands.  I’m happy to report this is a very good dupe for Essie ‘Buy Me A Cameo’.  Pigmentation is good, you can get away with 2 coats and you’ll be good to go!

CATRICE Hologreyphic

♥  HoloGREYphic (R 61,95) – I wouldn’t call this a holographic nail polish, but it’s definitely a duochrome.  This is a sheer, opalescent pearl with iridescent shimmer and a light blue base.  Very similar to Chanel ‘Atmosphere’ nail polish and it can be worn alone or as a top coat.  It looks exquisite on top of a darker nail polish like Essie ‘Mind Your Mittens’.  If you prefer something a bit more Spring-inspired, then 3 coats will give you a lovely sheer opalescent manicure.

CATRICE Cosmic Pink

♥  Cosmic Pink (R 61,95) – No other nail polish in my rather extensive collection comes close to this shade, it’s a striking fuchsia pink with underlying golden shimmers.  What it lacks in opacity (3 coats will give you full coverage), it makes up for in uniqueness.  So far I’ve only worn this once, but I couldn’t stop staring at my nails whenever I was out in direct sunlight.  It’s definitely the star of the 4 nail polishes in the collection.

CATRICE Stargazer

♥  Stargazer (R 61,95) – A molten gold shade that is very similar to Essie ‘Good As Gold’ but a bit more cool-toned.  It’s also on the sheer side, but you can definitely get away with 2 thick coats for full opacity.  I think this shade will look stunning on medium to dark skin tones, especially for a Summer pedicure.

Next up we are taking a look at the ‘Pure Chrome Eyeshadows’ in the collection.  All 3 are extremely soft & buttery, and have an intense frosty finish.  There is a bit of powdery fallout once you have dipped your brush in the eyeshadow but if you tap off the excess before applying it to your lids, you won’t have issues with fallout under the eyes or on the cheeks.

CATRICE Lumination Eyeshadow Radiant Rose Stargazer Interstellar

♥  Radiant Rose (R 69,95) – This is a true frosty white shimmery shade, and reminds me a lot of MAC ‘White Frost’ eyeshadow.  It is the perfect inner corner highlight to brighten up the eyes, and I find I’ve been reaching for this eyeshadow quite often lately (mainly because I’ve been struggling with insomnia and have woken up with very tired-looking peepers).

♥  Stargazer (R 69,95) – Quite similar to its namesake in the collection (the nail polish) but a teensy bit more khaki green in tone.  This one is not as pigmented as the other 2 eyeshadows in the collection, which is not necessarily a bad thing since it is easy to work with.  Just pop it on the eyelid, blend out the edges and dash out the door.  Simples!

♥  Interstellar (R 69,95) – This here, is my favourite eyeshadow in the collection.  I’m sure you already know I’m a sucker for a good shimmery nude eyeshadow and this one ticks all the boxes for me.  It’s pigmented, metallic, finely milled, and neutral in tone.  ‘Interstellar’ is the love child of MAC Amber Lights and MAC Arena eyeshadows – a medium copper with a warm undertone and a frosted, metallic finish.  It looks beautiful applied to the lids and blended out in the crease with a warm matte eyeshadow like Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’ or ‘Buck’ in the Urban Decay Naked Palette.

Last but definitely not least, we have the 2 lipsticks in the Lumination collection.

CATRICE Lumination Radiant Rose Pink Mattrix Lipstick

♥  Pink Mattrix (R 69,95) – A semi-matte vivid raspberry pink shade.  I really like the formula of this lippie, it’s creamy and even though it’s a matte, it doesn’t dry out the lips at all.  It’s also very pigmented, you can look forward to a bright lip in one clean swipe.

♥  Radiant Rose (R 69,95) – I’m usually not a fan of lipsticks that contain flecks of glitter, which is unfortunately the case with this one.  It’s a sheer, clear base with specks of gold and pink glitters.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful lipstick but I don’t like the textured feeling of glitter on my lips.  Think of it as a lip product that enhances the natural shade of your lips, while adding a dazzling sheen.

CATRICE products are available at Dis-Chem stores nationwide.

I think this is one of CATRICE’s best limited edition collections thus far, as mentioned the packaging as well as the quality is on par with a high-end brand.  Did you purchase any of the Lumination products?  If so, what are your thoughts?

I’m back tomorrow with a review and swatches blog post of the Essence ‘Merry Berry’ collection.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss it!
