I am a HUGE fan of Cotton On as a brand, not only because they sell fab clothes, but also because Typo is part of the Cotton On group. I can never just quickly pop into a Typo store, I always have to walk around the store (even if I was there just a few days ago) and take a look at everything on display. Scanning the shelves from top to bottom, checking if there’s some magical item I missed the last time I visited, an item that needs to find a ‘forever home’ with me. I only wear Cotton On track pants & harem pants at home, they’re just so darn comfy and super soft too (I always wait for them to go on SALE for R 100,00 each)! I’ve heard the Cotton On BODY bralettes are very comfortable too, so will be checking them out next time I’m at a store.
Anyway, today we’re chatting about affordable lippies. I used to be under the impression that long-wearing pigmentation goes hand-in-hand with spending a decent amount of money. Then as I started testing out more affordable brands, I realized that it’s not necessarily true. Towards the end of last year Cotton On sent me a lovely parcel containing some of the new Rubi Cosmetics makeup items and nail polishes. I immediately unwrapped the lipsticks (I received 8 of the 20 shades) and started to sniff and check out the colours. I couldn’t swatch them just yet, as I still needed to take photos for my blog post…I do love a good fresh, unused product photo here on the blog every now & again.
These lipsticks are definitely not on the splurge end of the spectrum, and I have to admit: I totally get a kick out of discovering budget-friendly lip products that still pack a punch! I’m going to let the lip swatch photos below do most of the talking, since I’m sure you are keen to see what the actual shades look like on the lips.
I think the Rubi lipsticks are great quality for the price. You can choose from a selection of 20 shades that are available in both matte and creme finishes. The texture of these are surprisingly nice too, they are insanely pigmented and even the mattes don’t dry out the lips at all (in fact, I would actually say they’re more of a satin, than a matte finish). Rubi Cosmetics really catered for all lipstick lovers, with shades that range from juicy & bright, to dark & vampy, to light & neutral.
Some of these shades do tend to cling to dry areas on the lips and will settle into lip lines, so make sure you exfoliate before applying. The darker shades linger on the lips and fade after about 4 hours, leaving behind a slight stain. I apply every single one of these shades straight from the lipstick bullet (no lip liners, no lip brushes) and found all are fairly easy to apply. I needed to do a bit of clean up around the edges of my lips when I applied Ruby Red & Blood Plum, but I was in a bit of a hurry to get through swatching all the shades, so if you take your time when applying these shades, you’ll get a clean, crisp edge.
The packaging is simple, sleek and fun! The reflective silver case doubles up as a makeshift mirror.
I prefer wearing lip products that have little to no fragrance and was so happy to discover these lipsticks from Rubi have absolutely NO scent to them.
Below are lip swatches of all the shades I own, in order of the first photo you see above.
Peach Bloom – Super neutral shade with a semi-glossy finish, this kind of gives me the equivalent of ‘concealer lips’. Probably my least favourite shade but that’s down to personal preference. It’s very, very similar to my MAC Viva Glam Gaga 2 lipstick.
Garnet Rose – A romantic nude pink shade with a semi-glossy finish, it’s not too cool-toned and not too warm-toned…just right! I love the creamy texture & it gives a natural rosy hue to my lips.
90s Pink – The creamiest, Barbie-est pink in the whole world, I think it might just be a dupe for MAC Saint Germain. This lipstick gives a satin finish to the lips but is unfortunately not very long lasting because it is so creamy.
Orange Cracker – Super bright and cheerful orange shade with a satin finish. It’s very creamy and because of this, it tends to accentuate uneven skin on the lips. It stayed on for a decent amount of time, about 2 hours without reapplication.
Flamingo Pink – I love this shade so much! I’m getting more & more into bright shades and this is the most beautiful coral pink shade I own. Very creamy in texture and gives a satin finish to the lips.
Raspberry – Another superb shade… This vibrant raspberry lippie will look stunning on any skin tone! This lippie lasts surprisingly well on the lips and doesn’t fade in patches. It features a creamy, yet satin finish that feels very comfortable on the lips.
Ruby Red – Rich in pigment, this neutral to cool-toned red shade (semi-matte finish) will definitely turn heads wherever you go. It lasts quite well on the lips and leaves behind a subtle red stain.
Blood Plum – Oooooh, such a vampy shade. I still can’t really tell if these dark shades suit me (I think they make me look pale) but I’m going to see if I can rock this burgundy lippie during the Winter season this year. This is another shade that accentuates dry, patchy areas on the lips – exfoliation is key. It fades after about 4 hours and gives the lips a beautiful tint.
The Rubi Cosmetics lipsticks retail for R 69,00 each and are available from selected Cotton On stores nationwide.
I’ll be using some of the other Rubi Cosmetics products in an upcoming video, so be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss out.
