There is nothing worse than having perfectly styled hair and flawless makeup, only to walk out the front door right into a thunderstorm. Am I right, girls? We’ve been having very strange weather lately – cloudy, rainy, sunny all in one day. To be quite honest, it’s driving me dilly because my hair is constantly frizzy and cloudy weather means I can’t film YouTube videos. That’s what you get for making use of only natural daylight when filming videos, I really should invest in proper studio lighting or even just a ring light… Anyway, I’ll stop complaining.
While we can’t control the weather, we can certainly keep our hair and makeup in tip-top shape. Here are my tips:
♥ If you’re lucky enough to know whether it’ll be raining before you apply your makeup, then choose cream shadows and blushes instead of powder. Cream products last longer (whether you’re dealing with humidity / moisture in the air) and can be blended more easily. When powder gets wet, it tends to become patchy. A dewy BB cream is your BFF on a rainy day, because it requires less blending and fixing it (if you got stuck in a rainstorm) is a lot easier than a heavy coverage foundation. We’ve all experienced the irritating face-melting effect of heavy makeup in high humidity weather – not a cute look.
♥ Opt for a natural makeup look on those days when the weather is gloomy. Swop out a heavy smokey eye (difficult to clean up if it gets wet) for something that is light and simple.
♥ If your hair tends to become a frizzy mane, with fly-aways flying in all directions when the weather gets drizzly, the only option is to wear your hair in a cute bun, braid or ponytail. Don’t even think about curling your hair (especially if you have fine hair) because you will lose those waves / curls within a few minutes of stepping out into humid air.
♥ Another tip to avoid ‘the frizz’ is to keep the hair’s cuticle sealed. Use a lightweight silicone product such as the John Frieda Frizz Ease Hair Serum or John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hair Spray. Trust me, the Frizz Ease range by John Frieda is fantastic!
♥ Waterproof mascara and eyeliner formulas will resist extreme weather conditions. Choose a waterproof gel formula eyeliner, I love the Inglot #77 gel liner, it’s black as night & won’t budge! A waterproof mascara has great staying power and won’t melt in the rain. But always remember: Don’t rub your eyes if they get wet. Rubbing will lead to smudging and if you used a waterproof eye makeup product, things will get real messy, real fast.
♥ Make sure your makeup bag always contains touch-up products. Makeup wipes (to do a bit of clean-up), a Beautyblender sponge (a decent dupe is the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge available at selected Foschini stores and online at BIOVEA) and cotton buds are lifesavers to keep on hand during inclement weather.
I have a sneaky suspicion I’ll be making use of most of these beauty tips to weather the storm in Cape Town whilst we’re on holiday this week. Apparently the weather has also been quite unpredictable, so I’ve had to pack for all 4 seasons!
