NEW essence Range Update 2017

essence Range Update 2017

Every year I look forward to the new essence and CATRICE permanent range updates – mainly because they are 2 brands that are constantly launching innovative and exciting products!  Plus, their products don’t break the bank either!  This year I was REALLY looking forward to the essence range update because I have been swooning over all the new products I have seen featured on their Instagram account.  They’ve really stepped up their game, and they’re one of those brands that like to keep up to date with the latest trends.

The new range update will filter into stores during the month of April, but I must be honest:  I’m a bit disappointed.  As it turns out, South Africa is unfortunately not getting the entire range update – in fact, from the looks of things…I don’t think we’re even getting half of the amount of new products they’ve launched overseas.  I have no idea why this is, especially since essence is a very well known affordable brand here in SA and I think their products sell out quite fast too.

In today’s blog post I’ll be introducing you to the new products you’ll see hit the shelves soon, and I’ll be sure to film a makeup tutorial featuring all the new items as soon as I can (I’ll also rate the products in the video like I did in this makeup tutorial).

Please note: The below descriptions are not reviews of the products, they are excerpts taken from the press release I was sent.  I don’t have the actual products yet, so I am unable to give you a review of a certain product right now.

Let’s take a peek at the products that will be joining the essence permanent range this year:

essence My Must Haves Palette

This 4-pan palette is waiting to be personalized – simply select your favourite eyeshadows and use the special click-mechanism to pop them in the multi-functional palette.  Only the 4-pan palette will be coming to South Africa (there is also an 8-pan palette available overseas).  There will be 20 eyeshadow shades available:

essence My Must Haves Palette Inserts

The empty palette will retail for R34,95 and the single eyeshadows will also retail for R34,95 each (there will be 20 single eyeshadows available in the collection).  Thus a filled 4-pan palette will set you back R174,75.

Is that expensive for an essence 4-pan eyeshadow palette?  I can’t decide…

essence All About Toffee Eyeshadow Palette

This eyeshadow palette offers 8 trendy, perfectly aligned colours – from light shades to medium and dark nuances.  The soft and long-lasting texture with various effects allows you to create diverse looks.

Volume Stylist 18h Curl & Hold Mascara

The creamy black formula with micro styling waxes provides the lashes with long-lasting volume and incredible curl.

The diamond shape of the brush contains lengthening fibers to create long, full lashes.

essence Lash Princess Sculpted Volume Mascara

Dramatic volume or defined lashes – the new mascara with a special tapered brush can do both and sculpts the lashes individually.

essence Shine Shine Shine Lipgloss

The smooth, supple texture of this gloss creates an extreme shine with a wet-look effect on the lips.  From nude nuances to intensive colours and prism glow effects.  Will be available in 10 shades, including a clear gloss (not pictured above).

essence Camouflage Full Coverage Concealer

Long-lasting and highly pigmented, the liquid-creamy texture reliably covers up dark circles under the eyes and other skin irregularities.  Will be available in 2 shades: ’05 Ivory’ and ’10 Nude’.

essence Luminous Matt Bronzing Powder

The matte bronzing texture with a silky-shimmering core creates a subtle, sun-kissed look.  Will be available in 1 shade: ’01 Sunshine’.

essence Instant Matt Make-Up Setting Spray

This light, transparent spray is enriched with a natural complex of active ingredients that mattifies the skin, sets makeup in place and extends wear time.

essence Colour Boost High Pigment Nail Paint

The highly pigmented nail polishes in trendy pastel and intensive colours ensure Summery nail styles.  The shiny formula is full coverage and offers a smooth finish with just 1 application.  Will be available in 7 shades.

essence Glow & Care Luminous Nail Polish

This new nail polish range strengthens and protects the nails, whilst creating a soft glow with light shimmer effects.  The formula contains Kukui oil to moisturise and strengthen the nails.  Will be available in 4 shades.

I decided to also include some of the new products that are unfortunately NOT coming to South Africa (above).  I wish essence would consider bringing them to our shores – perhaps we can convince them?  If there’s a specific product that tickles your fancy, maybe send them a tweet or post to their Facebook page.  I personally was REALLY looking forward to the ‘Waterkiss Glossy Lip colours’, the ‘Cushion Eyeliner’ (a dupe for this Stila one perhaps?), the ‘Strobing Highlighter’, the ‘BLUSHplay Sculpting Blush Palette’, the ‘hi’lighting Eyeshadow Mousse’, the ‘Strobing Highlighter Sticks’, and the ‘Camouflage Makeup Brush’.

Perhaps they’ll arrive later this year?  Who knows….  Let’s hold thumbs!

As always you will find essence makeup stands at Clicks, Dis-Chem, and selected Pick n Pay & Red Square stores.  You can also purchase essence products online at, Red Square, and Foschini For Beauty.

essence Question

Be sure to check back in on the blog on Wednesday, as I have the new CATRICE range update to show you.  As for tomorrow, I’ll have my ‘Review, Swatches & Makeup Look’ blog post for the essence ‘Lights Of Orient’ collection up for you bright and early tomorrow morning.

Holy mackerel..the price of the 4-pan palette is definitely too expensive for a brand like Essence! Especially since I’ve read online that not all the eyeshadows are that great in terms of pigmentation… HHHHMMM, it’s a tough one but I dont think I’ll get the palette. I will be buying the lipglosses though, they look beautiful. 🙂

I really don’t understand why they don’t just bring all the products to South Africa!? I mean their shelves are constantly empty, which to me shows that people are buying their products? I really would have wanted to buy the water kiss glosses and the highlighting products.

Thanks for letting us know about the new products, Luzanne XOXO

I love that each year they bring new and unique products to us, but the price of that palette is a bit steep imo. I’m excited for the other products though.

I agree with you, Luzanne, I wish they would have brought all the new products to SA. 🙁

Thank you for letting us in on what to expect from essence this year. I’m feelign a bit deflated becoz we’re not getting a lot of the things I was so excited for. But like you said, maybe they’ll bring it in later this year. x

I don’t think the price of the palette is terrible but I can see why a lot of people think it’s too much money to spend on a quad. Imagine how much the 8-pan palette would have cost to fill up!? Maybe that’s why essence SA isn’t bringing it to South Africa?

Yicks I think that the 4 pan is way to expensive for a brand like essence . Considering that not all there eyeshadow are really pigmented and some of them dont show up on darker skin people. You could get a better eyeshadow for that price .

  7. 10 April 2017 / 14:35

I think that the price of the 4-pan palette is too much especially if the Toffee Eyeshadow Palette is R89,95 and it will be cheaper to just buy the single eyeshadows. I can’t wait to test the make-up setting spray because I hardly use make-up so I don’t see the necessity of buying a more expensive brand. I think we should set up a petition for more products, especially as all the new collections just fly off the shelves, surely that’s an indication of the demand? It’s also a great range to buy when introducing your teenager to make up.

No thanx, I’ll pass on that 4 pan palette. Where in the world did they come up with that price?! It’s in the same price range as a Loreal quad then?

I agree with Theresa above, their products are in high demand and I often see the shelves are empty. Just because we live in SA doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the same type of trendy products, hey?

LA Girl has a gel eyeliner that looks similar to Essence new cushion eyeliner. Perhaps give that a try. Its very affordable at R50 and also very easy to use especially for dramatic looks like a cat eye.

I can’t wait to try the new concealer and mascaras. It’s crazy that we don’t get all the new products here…just doesn’t make any sense to me.

I love that they’re bringing us new products but I think they need to rethink the pricing of that palette. Many South Africans can’t afford expensive brands (can you imagine now with junk status), and I’m afraid the product sales for the palette and eyeshadows won’t be great in 2017. I am happy to see their nail polishes are still affordable, and their other prices remain the same. That’s good.

I dont think I will pay R175 for a 4-pan eyeshadow palette. Yes, its nice that you can remove the shadows but still, I think its too expensive. Ive also read on overseas blogs that the eyeshadows are hit and miss, some have good pigmentation.. others are total mishaps. As for the other products that arent coming to SA, I dont understand why they wouldnt just update the entire range.?

Very excited about the concealer, makeup setting spray and bronzer. I think I’ll pass on the eyeshadow palette. 🙂

  14. 10 April 2017 / 18:30

I definitely think for a 4 pan from Essence that is too expensive, BUT bear in mind there are always 3 for 2 promos going on, so if one waits for that…4 pan will cost about R140 (plus a 5th eyeshadow) which then isn’t bad considering its customisable. I then hope the quality of the shadows are good.

I was hoping for the micellar water as well as a few others….I am always disappointed we don’t get everything and usually the stuff we don’t get are the actual range standouts. 🙁

I’ll pass on “das expensive” eyeshadow palette!

I’m looking forward to the Lash Princess Sculpted Mascara 🙂

  16. 11 April 2017 / 07:49

Oh my! The price of the 4 pan palette including the eyeshadows is way too high. I definitely wouldn’t want to purchase it, especially since their 8 pan eyeshadow palettes are under R100.
I was really looking forward to thr face and eye palette. So bummed we won’t be getting it. The blush palette also looks promising. I do really hope we will receive them in future. Can’t wait for your review on the Lights Of Orient collection. I loved the bronzer!

Yes, I think that R174.75 for the 4pan is expensive. I love that it is customisable as I seldom use all the colours in a palette. However, the ALL ABOUT TOFFEE EYESHADOW PALETTE for R89,95 looks like one I would probably use completely.

    Thank you for the update.

I visited a Discem yesterday and several items listed as not available where actually on the shelves i.e. the 8 pan was there, the eye & face palette even the blushplay palette.

I purchased the 8 pan palette due to the fact that I can customise my own palette for once. Wish however there was a bigger variety of colours.
