So, I finished my Juice Revolution 5-day juice detox yesterday – YAY! I am both happy and sad – happy, because I get to eat solid foods again; and sad, because I know how good this whole experience was for my body.
Let’s first go over how the rest of my days went, shall we?
I followed the same basic process as Day 1, 2 and 3 – started with my morning kick start drink consisting of warm / hot water and lemon juice. Then at 9h00, I had my herbal tea and followed that up with my Ginger Shot (which is delicious by the way) at 9h55. At 10h00 I had my first juice, which was a green juice and this one contained quite a few green veggies (you can click on the photo above to enlarge it). Funny enough, though, it went down quite easily and I think that’s because my body was getting used to the taste and texture of the green juices. I was kept quite busy with work, so the day fortunately flew by for me. I had a very good night’s rest, on most nights during my detox, I was ‘lights out’ as soon as my head hit the pillow!
Same process again, but none of the juices for the last day were green. I had 2 red beetroot juices and 2 peculiar tasting ‘Pear & Parsnip’ juices. Day 5 was also a very busy day for me, so it also went by quite fast. I finished off my last day with a delicious Pukka herbal called ‘Love’ which contained organic rose, chamomile & lavender flowers.
A couple of add-ons to the list I mentioned in my previous post on the things I noticed during my juice detox:
♥ The inside of my mouth turned into a fuzzy monster – my tongue, teeth and the inside of my mouth in general felt fuzzy all the time. I brushed my teeth about 4 times a day towards the end of my juice detox.
♥ I suffered from a couple of headaches during my detox (for reference, I hardly ever get headaches) but they didn’t last for very long.
♥ The sweaty episodes stopped after Day 2.
♥ The craving I had for salt & vinegar chips lasted throughout the 5 days BUT I probably only thought of the crisps once on Day 5.
♥ My sense of smell has been incredible, Neal cooked pan-fried mushrooms on Sunday night and only used a little bit of garlic but the smell was quite overwhelming for me. It definitely whacked me in the face a couple of times! Even normal, everyday food just smells amazing (even now that I’m done with the detox).
♥ During my detox I started to really appreciate the look, smell and general idea of food (any food, whether it’s a salad or a piece of steak).
♥ My cravings for junk food have not magically disappeared, I still like the idea of a good burger (but I might just stay away from the proper junky ones for a while longer). Food is life, and I really can’t imagine my life only eating raw vegetables and fruit. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE fruit and vegetables (always have) but to only eat a certain type of food all day, every day – gets real old, real fast!
♥ I don’t suggest using the LUSH lip scrub whilst being on this detox, it takes serious balls of steel to not lick that scrub off your lips… Fortunately, I do have balls of steel. I stupidly applied the scrub to my lips on Day 1 and as I was about to lick my lips, I remembered, so immediately rinsed it off. I didn’t use the scrub after that because that’s just asking for trouble!
♥ Keep busy during the day, but be mindful of the time – it really helps to keep your mind and body busy in order to not think about all the things you cannot have for the next couple of days. But don’t forget to drink your juices at the specified times because your blood sugar levels will drop and you will feel lethargic.
Am I happy I did this juice detox? Yes, I am – 1. it showed me that I can do anything I set my mind to; 2. my energy levels have increased and I have felt like being more productive during the days; and 3. I haven’t slept this well in quite a while.
Why start juicing? Apart from the reasons I mentioned in my first blog post on why I personally did this detox, there are numerous health benefits linked to juicing as well. Juicing boosts the immune system, helps with weight loss, decreases allergies, balances skin conditions, boosts shine and nourishment in the hair, increases energy, and helps with insomnia too.
Why do THIS juice detox? Juicing is time-consuming (believe me, I know). Washing, chopping, feeding and cleaning the juicer takes quite a bit of time out of your day (especially if you are thinking about doing a full-on juice detox where you will be consuming juices morning, afternoon and night). Not only is it time-consuming but you also need quite a bit of space in your fridge to store all the fruit and veggies. If you don’t own a juicer, you will have to go and buy one (their prices range from R 500 – R 4 000). With Juice Revolution, EVERYTHING is done for you. Your supplements are pre-packaged, the juices are frozen (or can be delivered fresh to your doorstep if you are based in Cape Town) and remember, Fiona already knows what types of juices you will need for each day during your juice fast. Basically, all the research and labour has already been done for you. Oh, and did I mention cleaning a juicer is a serious pain in the butt?!
Did this detox help increase my energy levels? Yes, it did – I have definitely felt a change in the amount of energy I have during the day. I’m not bouncing off the walls, like an Energizer Bunny, but the change has been noticeable. I usually don’t eat very regularly during the day (I skip breakfast most days), so I will make a conscious effort to start eating smaller meals more regularly during the day – that will also help with my blood sugar levels and energy.
Will I start juicing at home? Yes, I will. We already own an Oscar D900 juicer (which we paid a pretty penny for) and although we juice every now and again, it’s not often enough to really see / feel a difference. I probably will not be making any green juices for a while, though, I’ve had enough to last me a good amount of time.
What is the price of the 5-day detox? The price for the detox I did is R 1200 plus a delivery cost. For the pricing of the other packages, please get in contact with Fiona here.
Have I had that salt & vinegar potato crisps? Not yet… After doing something like this, you actually don’t want to stuff your face with processed junk food, not because you don’t crave it anymore (I still do), but because you’ve worked so hard to complete the juice detox, you don’t want to go out and spoil what you have accomplished (does that make sense?).
Did I lose weight? I weighed myself this morning, and I lost 2,5kg on the dot!
All in all, I’d say this was a really good experience for me and I’m happy I completed the Juice Revolution 5-day juice detox.
