My Juice Revolution Detox Journey {Part 1}

About a week ago I was browsing ‘The Black Hole’ (also known as Youtube) and came across an old video of Chloe Morello.  She is one of my absolute favourite Youtube beauty gurus, not only are her makeup skills insane but she is a total hoot too.  Anyway, this particular video was about a juice cleanse / detox she did back in 2012.  She mentioned in the video that doing the cleanse not only gave her loads of energy BUT she also stopped craving naughty foods like takeaways, biscuits and fizzy drinks.

So then it got me thinking:  I am a total couch potato at the moment, I spend close to 10 hours a day behind the computer (working a full day, plus then doing blog-related things) and then I spend another 1 to 2 hours sitting in front of the TV.  I don’t exercise (which is something I need to work on, I know) and although I eat relatively well (I love fruit and veggies), I also crave the occasional junk food item.

My body has been in a hibernation-type state for probably the last 6 months to a year – lack of energy is a major issue for me and my metabolism has slowed down quite significantly.  The slow metabolism is most likely because I turned 30 last year (although, I noticed the ol’ downward spiral started when I hit 27).  The lack of energy, though, is a mystery.  And by lack of energy, I mean even picking up the clothes horse is a total mission for me some days.

I knew I needed an energy boost, something to reboot my system.  So I immediately googled ‘juice detox’ and filtered my results to only show sites from South Africa.  To be honest, I didn’t expect to find an online South African-based company that would provide me with a detox system.  And yet…Juice Revolution was one of the first results that came up and when I saw they delivered nationally, my interest was piqued.  I sent Fiona (the founder of Juice Revolution SA, based in Somerset West) an enquiry and to cut a long story short, I decided to do the ‘5lbs in 5 Days Super Juice Detox’.  I’m not too focused on the 5lbs (2,25 kg) weight loss, I’m doing this more to kickstart my body.

A couple of days later, a big cooler box filled with my frozen juices, ginger shots, herbal teas, supplements and information folder was delivered to my doorstep.

Here are a couple of Juice Revolution facts for you:

♥  Juicing removes the insoluble fiber from vegetables and fruits.  While fiber is an important part of a healthy diet, removing the insoluble fiber allows for increased absorption of specific health promoting phytonutrients including enzymes, while the soluble fiber persists in the juice.  So in layman’s terms, by removing the fibers & essentially drinking your fruits and veggies, you are streamlining the whole nutrient delivery process.

♥  Juice Revolution juices are made by hand from fresh, high quality and organic (where possible) ingredients – all produce is washed with the award winning Environné Fruit and Vegetable Wash because water alone simply isn’t enough when you want the true benefits of fresh produce.

♥  Juice is extracted using a twin gear, twin auger juicer with shattering helical gear technology which ensures the highest possible levels of retained nutrients. The juice is bottled and immediately placed in a refrigerator.

♥  There are no added colorants, flavourants or preservatives in Juice Revolution juices.

♥  Each juice is 500ml.

♥  Some of the Juice Revolution juices / smoothies contain bio-live yoghurt but vegan alternatives are available.

♥  You can collect the fresh juices from the Juice Revolution Juicy Kitchen on Winery Road just outside Somerset West.

♥  Alternatively Juice Revolutions can deliver two days’ worth of fresh juice at a time in and around Cape Town.

♥  And for the rest of South Africa, Juice Revolution can blast freeze the juices for your specific program and deliver it frozen to your door.

♥  Blast freezing happens in under 2 hours, locking in all the nutrients and preserving the taste of the juice.

♥  Forget about getting your 5 portions of fruit an veggies in every day, with juicing you can easily get up to 10 or more portions per day.

I am starting with my 5-day detox tomorrow (Friday), so for the next 5 days I will be consuming no solid foods – 4 juices, 1 ginger shot, 2 herbal teas and my supplements provided by Juice Revolution.  I will be doing a blog post during my detox, as well as a blog post after my detox.  I have been mentally preparing myself for the last couple of days because I know it’s not going to be a walk in the park.  Believe me, I LOVE my food.  I love nibbling throughout the day and I love crunchy, savoury snacks.  It’s not going to be easy, but I believe this will give my body (and mind) the kickstart I need.

If you would like more information on the Juice Revolution juice detoxes (and can’t wait until I do my blog posts), you can find Fiona here and here.

Wish me luck!

Thanks, Stephanie! I hope this gives me the boost I need, I’ve had 2 juices so far (starting with my 3rd now) and the 1 was a bit….hhhmmm….how shall I put this…an acquired taste.

But hell, if I can do it – anyone can do it! :)

Thank you, Alli! Jy moet dit probeer! I’ll let you know how the veggie juices went down (I’m drinking most of the yucky ones today), but I’m feeling optimistic! :)

  4. Zee Mohlapi 10 January 2014 / 09:48

Tjoh! Do they put vegetables in the juice as well?! It must taste funny but I am always a sport for new things! I will wait for your blog posts, Lu, and will then maybe give it a go.

    Good luck, girrrl

    • Luzanne 10 January 2014 / 16:14

Thank you, Zee – haha you made me chuckle with the ‘girrrl’.

Yes, today’s juices are a bit challenging (I think it’s to REALLY give your body a swift kick up the butt!) but I’m not giving up hope! 😀 x

I love juicing, trying new combinations all the time. One of my favourite’s are Beetroot, Carrots, Ginger and an Apple. So yummy and good for you. This is a fantastic way to kickstart your heathy eating plan. Please keep us updated and good luck. xx

    • Luzanne 10 January 2014 / 16:16

The ginger shot I had this morning was DELICOUS!!! It had apple and a lekker kick of ginger in it, I really enjoyed it!

Thank you for wishing me luck, Ada – are you still going to do your raw vegan detox?

  7. Fiona 10 January 2014 / 12:40

Hi everyone, Fiona here from Juice Revolution. I just want to reassure you that the juices are delicious and easy to drink! They contain just the right combination of fruit and vegetables. Of the 20 juices on Luzanne’s plan there are only 2 that are a bit of a challenge (they are today Luzanne :)) but then they are offset by the 2 yummy yoghurt, blueberry, apple smoothies on Day 3!
Don’t believe what you hear about juice cleanses…it’s only 5 days, anyone can do anything for 5 days!! All in the mind. Juice on! x

    • Luzanne 10 January 2014 / 16:24

So true, Fiona – the Ginger Shot was amazing (I really enjoyed it) and then my first juice of the day was pretty good too. Like you said, there are 2 juices that are a bit challenging for me (I’m having my second one now) but it’s definitely not too hectic (or unbearable). One thing I can say though, is that my mind is definitely starting to play tricks on me – I NEVER eat salt & vinegar crisps and all of a sudden I can’t stop thinking about S&V chips!

It’s 100% all in the mind because my brain is only craving something because it knows it can’t have it! :)

  8. Tjoppie 10 January 2014 / 14:01

After spending the day just idling around the house and reading up on some interesting things about MSG, Soy and things in our food these days, i might just have to adopt a fully raw vegan lifestyle…… Have you had any cravings today? xxxx
