Here are my favourite products for the month of May. It’s been a good month, mainly because I took a short holiday. I had time to relax, rejuvenate and restore.
I have 5 favourites and 1 fail for the month – 2 of the products I’m going to mention are my top favourites because I have received quite a few compliments during the past couple of months whenever I wear these. Let’s jump right into it then…
I’ll start with my ultimate fav for the month – L’Oreal Lumi Magique Light Infusing Foundation.
My shade is N4, many many years ago I used their True Match foundation but the only thing that bugged me was that the packaging didn’t have a pump. This bottle has a pretty rose gold pump, what’s not to love? I have received SO many compliments on my skin whenever I wear this. When I go to my local MAC store, the ladies always ask me which MAC foundation I’m wearing and then I quite proudly tell them that it is NOT a MAC foundation but a L’Oreal one. Some of them sometimes give me the stink eye, but hey…as long as my skin looks amazing, I’ll take 50 stink eyes! It’s the perfect foundation for normal to dry skin and gives a satin to natural finish. I like to set my foundation (any foundation I use) with a powder, my skin isn’t really dry anymore (I was on Oratane, the generic version of Roaccutane, for 6 months and ended my prescription about 3 weeks ago) but leans more towards normal skin type now. If you have very dry skin, I don’t see the need to set this with a powder but if you have normal skin then I’d suggest setting it as it could start feeling a bit slick.
Favourite because it gives medium coverage, blends perfectly and gives my skin a glowy & luminous finish without looking oily or shimmery.
While we’re on the subject of foundations, my second favourite this month is the Sigma Flat Kabuki (F80) brush.
This makeup brush is my new favourite to apply foundation, well actually there’s a stiff competition going on between my F80 and the Beauty Blender sponge. I use this brush for applying my L’Oreal Lumi Magique foundation as it is water-based, the Beautyblender sponge tends to soak up water-based products a bit (even when dampened). The brush is made of dense synthetic bristles (perfect for using with liquid or cream products) and is probably the softest brush I have ever used. Dense bristles help with blending / buffing product into the skin for a flawless finish and believe me, this brush does the job WELL!
Favourite because it gives my skin an airbrushed look and is super soft and gentle on sensitive skin.
Next up we have the MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural Powder in Medium.
Some people use this as a powder foundation, I use it as a finishing powder. This silky powder gives a satin to matte finish for natural looking skin. The powder is finely milled, which makes it suitable for use as a setting powder for under-eye concealer.
Favourite because it gives my skin a gorgeous flawless finish, without making it look heavy or over-done.
Then we have NYX Butter Gloss in Maple Blondie.
Sorry ladies, these are not available in South Africa. After seeing quite a few Youtube beauty gurus (Jaclyn Hill, Shaaanxo, EleventhGorgeous) rave about these glosses, I decided to add one of them to my BeautyJoint basket a couple of months ago. I LOVE this gloss, and the name is fitting – it is super creamy and moisturising with great pigmentation and not sticky at all. These retail for $ 5,00 a pop (quite a bit cheaper than a MAC gloss) and they also contain more product than a MAC lipglass (6,5g versus 4,8g).
Favourite because the gloss feels like melted butter on my lips (Paula Deen would approve), doesn’t settle into my lip lines and the colour pay-off is great. I have also received so many compliments on my lip colour whenever I wear this. I placed an order for a few things on Cherry Culture and added another 2 of these to my basket, can’t wait for them to arrive!
Last favourite of the month (but definitely not the least) is my trusty little Nail & Cuticle Butter Stick by Essence.
Who likes dry and flaky cuticles? Yuck. Not me. This product is like a lip balm for your nails / cuticles. It is enriched with Vitamin E, Shea Butter, Lanolin and natural bees wax to give your cuticles the nourishment and moisture they need. The scent of this is yummy, it smells like a tropical fruit salad – I’ve contemplated using it on my lips but that would be weird, right? Right?
Favourite because it’s easy to use (I’m not ambidextrous but it’s certainly not difficult to hold like a pen and messily run the stick over my cuticles) PLUS it doesn’t leave me with oily fingers (I also use the OPI Avoplex Cuticle Replenishing Oil from time to time and it kind of leaves you with slippery fingers).
Now for the fail of the month…
I really enjoy using Revlon products, I think they are a great drugstore brand – their Colorburst Lip Butters and Kissable Balm Stains are thebomb.com. I, however, did not like this product at all. Yes, it’s creamy. Yes, the pigmentation is awesome. BUT there is something in this eyeliner that does not sit well with my eyes. I initially used this as a liner for my upper waterline and to fill in any gaps between my eyelashes whenever I did a winged eyeliner. Every single time I used this, after a few minutes my eyes would start to water, become puffy and bloodshot red. People would ask me whether I had been crying – embarrassed much? I don’t have particularly sensitive eyes either…so no, this stuff is not going anywhere near my eyes ever again.
Ok guys, so those are my favourites for the month of May. I recently ordered quite a few things off Rubybox and Cherry Culture, so I’m hoping to receive my enormous orders soon – maybe some of the products will be featured in my June Favourites…
