Hot Off The Shelf – Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette In South Africa

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette

Ok, so the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette isn’t really ‘hot off the shelf’ in the US and UK but here in South Africa, it’s pretty darn hot.  Us South Africans don’t usually have access to brands like Urban Decay, NARS, Laura Mercier, Soap & Glory etc., but fortunately one online shop recently started stocking some of these special brands.  When I saw Rubybox had the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette in stock 2 weeks ago (only for VIP members though), I immediately ordered it as I had been stalking various international online shops & it was out of stock EVERYWHERE.  The price tag was also impressive, since it retails for about R 530,00 in the US and Rubybox was selling it for R 640,00 (plus free delivery).  I bought the Naked 3 palette and the NARS Multiple in Orgasm (but this is a review on the Naked 3 palette, so I won’t go into detail on the Multiple).

The Urban Decay Naked 3 palette is a rose gold toned palette that includes 12 eyeshadows – 3 matte shades, 3 satin shades and 6 shimmer shades.

Let’s start with the packaging, the case is a rose gold metal case with wavy indents.  It’s similar to the Naked 2 pencil box type packaging, which is a lot sturdier than the Naked 1 palette.  When you open the palette up, you get a nice big mirror on the inside – this is one of the things I absolutely love about the Naked palettes, because it’s so travel friendly (no need to take a mirror with you on holiday).

You also receive 4 primer potion samples: Original, Sin, Eden and Anti-Aging.  Urban Decay was quite generous with the sample sizes, so each packet should last you well over a week (remember, you only need the tiniest amount to prime your eyelid).

Also included in the palette is a dual-ended Urban Decay brush, both sides are made with synthetic bristles (as all Urban Decay brushes are) – one side is a fluffy blending brush and the other side is a flat shader brush.  I find the blending side isn’t all that great because I think a natural bristle brush blends a lot easier BUT I love the flat shader side.  Whenever I use a cream eyeshadow like the Maybelline Color Tattoos, I use this brush to apply it to my lid.

So let’s open up this beauty…

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette Review

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette Review

All the shades in the palette are new, fresh shades (there are no repeated shadows i.e. in the Naked 2 palette ‘Half Baked’ was repromoted from the Naked 1 palette).  The palette is really a romantic palette because it contains the most beautiful rose-toned eyeshadows.  There are 4 dark shades in the palette and 8 light to medium shades – the darker shades are super pretty and will allow you to create versatile day-to-night looks.

Strange is a pale, white-pink with a satin matte finish, perfect as a brow bone or inner corner highlight.

Dust is a warm light-medium pink with white and gold glitter particles.

Burnout is a rosy peach with a pearlescent finish.

Limit is a medium mauve with a matte finish.  This shade is actually darker in person, I couldn’t get the colour to show up true to colour in the photos.

Buzz is a copper rose shade with a frosty sheen.

Trick is a gorgeous copper shade with gold glitter particles & a frosted finish.  I have seen some people complain that this shade has little to no colour pay-off (I didn’t have that issue).  If you do have this issue, just scrape the top layer of the eyeshadow, this seems to solve the problem.

Nooner is a matte rosy plum shade.

Liar is a metallic medium brown with a warm undertone.

Factory is a bit darker than Liar with a warm, reddish undertone (also a shimmer).

Mugshot is a frosted medium warm-toned taupe shade.

Darkside is a cool-toned, purple-taupe shade with a satin finish.

Blackheart is a beautiful blackened burgundy shade with warm brick undertones and tiny red shimmers.

Here are a couple of swatches for you – Dust, Burnout, Limit, Trick and Blackheart are my faves.

It retailed for R 640,00 on Rubybox (but I guess everyone jumped at the chance to own this beautiful palette because it is sold out right now).  It is available on All4Women, but has a steep price tag – R 1360,00.

{UPDATE}  Urban Decay is coming to South Africa during the first half of 2016!  I’m not talking about resellers, I’m talking authorised stockists in a department store (but I’m not sure if Urban Decay will be sold at a UD counter in Edgars / Stuttafords, or if they’ll have stand-alone stores).  There are a couple of online (and Instagram) stores in South Africa that do stock the Urban Decay palettes BUT be very careful of fakes.  I am personally very hesitant to recommend these stores to you, because there are a lot of fake Urban Decay palettes out there, and I have heard so many horrifying stories of allergic reactions due to the low quality ingredients.  Trust me, you don’t want to go blind because you wanted to get your hands on an Urban Decay palette.  I would much rather you purchase them from Beauty Bay or Feelunique, as these are reliable stockists.

I own all three Naked palettes (I know, it’s probably overkill), and I am unable to choose one favourite palette.  I love all three palettes equally but for different reasons:  Naked 1 is a great all-rounder warm-toned palette, Naked 2 is a more cool-toned palette but equally as gorgeous as the Naked 1.  And Naked 3 is a rose gold themed palette, and you guys know how much I love me some rose gold!  What I can say, though, it that I am going to use the heck out of this palette (especially now with Valentine’s Day coming up!).

I am so impressed, you always make a huge effort with your posts and photos and today’s post shows that once again!!!

The shades are absolutely beautiful, I agree. I have been using this palette so often because it suits my skin tone perfectly.

    Wonderful review, Luzanne x

Brilliant review – you always put in so much effort to your reviews, thank you 🙂 Naked 1 is my favourite but I am loving this one. You also need the Naked Basics (never overkill haha) *hugs* xxx

    My oh my…this is a beauty…

Must get my boyfriend to buy one for me for Valentine’s Day, this will be the perfect gift for me. I’ll just leave your blog post open on his desktop, hopefully he gets the message. Might have to stick a post-it note to the screen saying: VALENTINE’S GIFT FOR ESTEE!!!

Truly is a beauty, you are so right! 🙂

thank you for the review, I yearn for all three Urban Decay palettes, and can’t find any. I am not a VIP member of rubybox, so i would’nt have been able to buy it anyway…. I so wish Urban decay can be more available. It is so frustrating!

      29 January 2014 / 11:03

I agree with you 100%, Claudia. There was talk towards the end of last year about UD coming to South Africa and being stocked in Edgars or Stuttafords…but I haven’t heard any more news on that.

I’ll snoop around for you online and will send you links to any shops where I can find them. These palettes are great quality (probably the best I’ve tried), the shadows are super pigmented, buttery and blends SO well.

I swear you are the perfect advertisement for companies because you make everything look and sound so amazing. I’ll be the one trolling all the websites you mentioned waiting for it to be back in stock! *raises hand*

      29 January 2014 / 11:05

      Haha! Thanks so much, Ronel!

Just keep an eye on the websites I mentioned in my post, it’s bound to be restocked somewhere soon. Unfortunately Beauty Bay doesn’t ship the UD palettes to South Africa anymore (I think it’s because so many parcels get lost). Also, be careful about buying any UD products on eBay, most of the cheaper products are counterfeit / fakes. 😉

  10. 29 January 2014 / 21:46

I’ll be honest, when I saw this was being released I was less than thrilled…and then after watching countless videos I was even more disappointed. I heard so many negative reviews. But after swatching it myself, I think I’ve had a change of heart. The colors are gorgeous! I really am loving this palette now, and I’m contemplating on purchasing it.
Wonderful review and pictures, as always Luzanne!

    • Luzanne
      29 January 2014 / 23:18

The shades are very beautiful, I honestly don’t know why this palette would get negative reviews. The shades aren’t really similar to any of the other shades in the other Naked palettes in my honest opinion.

      I think you should get it… 😉

Thank you so much for your sweet words, Lily. xxx

  11. 30 January 2014 / 08:56

It is so beautiful! Really wanted this but thought I’d rather save the money because I do have a ton of eyeshadows….and I have my eye on the Dior Spring 2014 collection. Sigh…too many beautiful products! Enjoy your beautiful palette XXX

      30 January 2014 / 11:12

I also have a ton of eyeshadows and palettes – haha! But I just can’t help myself when it comes to Urban Decay palettes, have to have them all! 🙂

This is so beautiful! I’m getting married next year, and I will not settle for anything other than this palette for my wedding makeup! haha! I literally felt like CRYING when I saw how fast this sold out on Rubybox. over dramatic, perhaps, but dammit, I was heartbroken. hahaha!
    Awesome review as always 🙂

    • Luzanne
      1 February 2014 / 17:55

Most definitely NOT over dramatic – haha! I would have had a minor stroke if I had to miss out on this palette being sold on Rubybox! Hopefully they’ll have it back in stock soon enough! 🙂

Thank you so much for commenting, Adel! x

Oh wow, it looks amazing! Tough question time: if you had to recommend only one of the 3 Naked palettes to someone, what would you choose as being the best “all rounder” palette?

    • Luzanne
      4 February 2014 / 18:15

It IS amazing – haha! 😉

If you have a warm undertone to your skin, I would go with Naked 1. If you have a cooler undertone, then I’d get Naked 2. I love the Naked palettes, you can really create soooo many different looks with them!

Thanks for popping by and commenting, Hildegarde. 🙂

Hi Luzanne, love your blog! I stumbled across the naked range recently and absolutely have to have them all!!! Quick question, does rubybox deliver straight to your office or do they deliver to a P.O address?

    • Luzanne
      28 March 2014 / 12:58

Hey Helene! Thank you for your kind words. 🙂

I am so obsessed with all 3 Naked palettes, the quality of the shadows are incredible and they blend like a dream. Rubybox couriers the parcels to your office, not via postal service (thank goodness!!).

Hi Luzanne, I am really eager to buy the Naked Palette. However, as you know, it is quite pricey. How does the Urban Decay Naked palette compare to a MAC eyeshadow?

    • Luzanne
      23 August 2014 / 09:41

This particular palette does have shades with a bit of fall-out, more so than the Urban Decay Naked and Naked 2 palettes. But one would get the same from certain MAC shadows.

I personally feel the shades are a bit more buttery and a bit more pigmented than MAC shadows. It’s difficult to give you a solid 100% opinion, because some MAC eyeshadows are really, REALLY nice. Overall I do think Urban Decay shadows are great quality – soft, buttery and very easy to blend. 🙂

Im so impressed with all the naked 1 and 2 palettes, which stores in Cape Town South Africa can this be bought?

    • Luzanne
      28 October 2014 / 14:31

I agree – I own all 3 palettes and they are amazing quality! Urban Decay products are unfortunately not available in South Africa at the moment – Rubybox sold a couple of their items earlier this year on their website but most of it is sold out. 🙂
