February 2015 Favourites

February 2015 Favourites

How about we just call these ‘mid-month-favourites’ from now on, because I am clearly incapable of loading my monthly favourites blog posts at the end of each month.  Can you believe it has been almost 3 months since I loaded my last monthly favourites blog post – ‘December 2014 Favourites’ was not even an option for me as I was recovering from “The Operation” (most of you know about this) and January faves just kind of slipped my mind to be quite honest.  *hides face*

Ok, enough with the self-shaming!  February was all about discovering new products – skin care, hair care, body care and makeup too.  We have quite a few products to get through in this blog post, so let’s jump right in…

LA Girl Pro HD BB Cream

L.A. Girl Pro BB Cream, where have you been all my life?  You know when something is just so good, it makes you say “YES!” while clenching your teeth and doing a fist pump?  This product makes me do that whenever I use it, which has been almost every day lately.  When you’re used to dropping triple digits on foundation products, finding something with a price tag of only R 59,95 is a pleasant surprise.  It’s no secret I love a good bargain, but sometimes the products that are incredibly inexpensive, are also incredibly disappointing.  I am so glad I decided to pop this little tube in my shopping basket, it has been my ‘go-to’ foundation for the past month.

I first heard about this BB cream from Tati (GlamLifeGuru) – she loves it and to be honest, if it’s good enough for Tati, it’s good enough for me!  Ok…not really, I constantly find myself not enjoying the products that are hyped about (for example check out this blog post).  This BB cream gives the most natural finish to the skin (I would say a satin-matte finish), it gives medium coverage that is very buildable to give you full coverage where you need it most.  It is very easy to blend and the best part?  It is super long-lasting!  I usually apply this in the morning, set it with my Rimmel Stay Matte Powder and by the time I remove my makeup (after 8 to 10 hours) it still looks beautiful – no settling into fine lines and my skin still looks fresh & matte.  You can use your fingers or a makeup brush to apply this BB cream, but using your fingers will give you the most natural finish as the heat from your fingertips will help to blend the product into the skin.  Trust me, this gem deserves a spot in your makeup collection.

L.A. Girl Pro BB Cream retails for R 59,95 and is available at Dis-Chem stores (I think there are about 6 or 8 shades in the range, so you are guaranteed to find your perfect shade).

Lipidol Cleansing Body Oil

The Lipidol Cleansing Body Oil has been a firm favourite for a while now.  I’m on my 3rd bottle now and will keep repurchasing it for as long as we both shall live.  It’s an in-shower cleansing oil, which means you use it as a type of body wash product.  Don’t make the same mistake I did, though, the best way (and most cost efficient way) to use this is to pour a tablespoon amount in the palm of your hand, then apply all over the body.  You don’t need very much, because when comes into contact with water, it emulsifies and covers a wider area on the body.  Then gently swirl your bath lily / loofah all over your body for a little exfoliation.  Don’t just pour the oil into your loofah & expect it to foam up, because you’ll have to use a heck of a lot more – I found this method to be quite wasteful.

I also use this as a shaving oil – it creates a silky barrier between the razor blade and my skin, I haven’t experienced a nick / cut in a very long time.  I can even skip moisturising after my shower if I am in a hurry.  It doesn’t feel like a conventional oil in the sense that it might feel oily and sticky, it washes off easily & leaves my skin feeling nourished, soft and soothed.  I must admit, though, my favourite aspect of this cleansing body oil is the fragrance – it contains Lime essential oil and smells EXACTLY like the Rose’s Lime Cordial.  So refreshing!

The Lipidol Cleansing Body Oil retails for R 79,95 and is available at Clicks stores.

Tous Les Jours Le Exfoliator Beads

I believe we have a winner for the most interesting and unique skin care product in my collection!  I love the idea of creating your own facial scrub and these exfoliating beads from Tous Les Jours are just perfection.  Jojoba wax beads means this product is 100% natural, plus Tous Les Jours products are produced in South Africa – bonus!  I find these little beads are not too abrasive, so they’re suitable for all skin types and leave the skin feeling polished and smooth.  Add half a teaspoon amount to your favourite cleanser, massage in circular motions & rinse.  These round beads feel very gentle on the skin and will be a lifesaver during the Winter months when skin tends to become dry & dull.

You can purchase these Le Exfoliator Beads online at Tous Les Jours for R 55,00 and while you’re on their site, check out their range of PJs.  The ‘Emma Rose Blue Background’ PJ set is on my Winter wish list.

Milkshake Conditioning Whipped Cream

Another product that makes my heart skip a beat – this is the Milk_Shake Conditioning Whipped Cream and my hair has been loving it.  This is a deep conditioning leave-in treatment mousse that contains milk proteins to condition and strengthen the hair, leaving it feeling soft & manageable.  I particularly love this because it doesn’t weigh my hair down, it acts like a detangler (my hair is prone to knots & tangles – ouch!) and…it smells incredible (like a mix of birthday cake, toffee and buttery popcorn!  *gulp*  Delicious!  It looks like whipped cream, but is super lightweight and non-greasy (non-sticky too).

My little sample can is empty  and I even contemplated using a sharp object to open up the can to scrape out every last drop but that is a bit too hardcore for me, I’ll probably amputate an arm in the process.  My hair feels silky soft  and is easy to style.  A full size Milk_Shake Conditioning Whipped Cream retails for R 245,00 and is available online at Salon Online (SA-based online store) or at selected hair salons nationwide.  If all the Milk_Shake products smell this good, I’ll be picking up their Glistening Shampoo Oil and No Frizz Glistening Milk for sure!

Blistex DCT Lip Treatment Protectant

I have really been enjoying the Blistex DCT Lip Conditioning Treatment these past few months.  If you read my ‘Where Did I Disappear To’ blog post at the beginning of January, then you will know this was a total lifesaver for my lips after the operation and I’ve been using it non-stop since.  Aloe , cocoa butter and Vitamins A & E moisturise and soften the lips.  If you struggle with dry, chapped lips (especially in Winter), slap this on and call it a day.  Trust me, you will be amazed at the results after using this lip treatment for a couple of days.  It also contains SPF20 and is probably the only thing I’d take with me to a deserted island.

It also contains menthol which adds a cooling / tingling sensation when applied (this lasts only for a few seconds) and feels like a refreshing, lightweight butter on the lips.  Blistex DCT retails for R 59,95 and is available at Dis-Chem and Clicks stores.

REN Instant Firming Beauty Shot

I must be honest, I didn’t think I would love the REN Instant Firming Beauty Shot as much as I do.  Don’t get me wrong, I have loved each & every single REN product I have tested in the past but this product has taken my love for the REN Skincare brand to a whole new level!  The main idea behind the Beauty Shot is that it acts like a tightening serum and delivers a powerful shot of Hyaluronic Acid (I’ve mentioned HA quite a few times on the blog already).  It’s important to remember, though, that not all Hyaluronic Acids are created equal, some absorb & perform better than others and because of this REN used the middleweight molecular acids in Beauty Shot, as they provide the longest skin plumping effect with more instant results.

Think of this as ‘Shapewear’ or ‘Spanx’ for your face – it tightens & firms all the right areas, reduces the look of pores and instantty reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  My skin feels smooth and hydrated & looks bright and radiant.  I also love that all REN Skincare products are formulated without parabens, sulfates and phthalates.

I like to apply 3 or 4 drops to cleansed skin, and then follow up with my day / night moisturiser.  It is a boosting product designed to work with your other skincare products, so don’t wear it alone as it needs the moisture from your day lotion or night cream to bind to. It also smells like Turkish Delight – love!

REN Instant Firming Beauty Shot is currently on sale in the REN SA online store for R 450,00.

LOccitane Shea Whipped Hand Cream

Another lovely whipped product, this is the L’Occitane Shea Whipped Hand Cream.  When I first received a press sample containing the new Shea Whipped collection, I expected the products to be more lightweight than any of the other L’Occitane products I have used in the past but I didn’t expect the collection to be this magical.  I don’t use the word ‘magical’ very loosely here on the blog, so you should know I mean business.  The airy texture of this hand cream means it is an absolute joy to rub into the skin and 25% of this is pure shea butter!  A little goes a long way and the fluffy texture means it absorbs really fast.  It is insanely hydrating and nourishing, and yet it feels lightweight and non-greasy on the skin.

When the cream comes out of the tube, it is formed into the shape of a star, which reminds me of squirty whipped cream in a can.  The scent is very comforting, almost like baby powder and will work well with any perfume / fragrance since it’s not overpowering at all.  I have been trying to use these Shea Whipped products very sparingly (there’s a Whipped Body Cream and a Whipped Shower Foam too) because they’re limited edition but I have recently decided life’s too short to keep your favourite products for those ‘special occasions’ only.

The limited edition Shea Whipped Hand Cream retails for R 120,00 in the L’Occitane SA online store or in L’Occitane boutiques (you can check out their list of boutiques here).

LA Girl Beauty Brick Nudes

Last but definitely not least, we have the L.A. Girl Beauty Brick Nudes Eyeshadow Palette.  Now before you get all sad because you weren’t able to get your hands on this beauty (it was limited edition), I have a surprise for you:  I managed to bag AN EXTRA ONE of these and will be doing a GIVEAWAY soon!  This eyeshadow palette is like Big Foot or a Unicorn, only a select few have managed to see it in real life…  I chatted with a sales assistant at Dis-chem the other day and she confirmed each Dis-Chem store only received FOUR of these palettes.

Anyway, you can take a look at my ‘Review – L.A. Girl Beauty Brick Nudes vs. Urban Decay Naked 3’ blog post to see swatches and read my thoughts on this affordable palette.  In two words:  Long-term relationship.  If I could, I would sleep with this baby next to me every single night but I’m pretty sure Neal wouldn’t be too impressed.  The rose gold tones in the palette will suit all skin tones and the quality of the shadows is top notch.  I really think I hit the jackpot with this 12-pan palette from L.A. Girl – best of all, it retails for R 69,95.  I doubt there is still a Dis-Chem store in South Africa that will have this in stock but don’t fret, I’ll be giving away the L.A. Girl Beauty Brick Nudes palette in the next couple of weeks.

Those were all my favourites for the month of February, folks!  Let me know if there is anything I mentioned in this post that piqued your interest, I’d love to hear…

  1. Simônè 18 March 2015 / 14:51

love it!! I have been looking for the LA Girl Nudes palette and every store is sold out :-( But I did go past signature and they stock a Naked palette similar to the Urban Decay Naked Palette with the primer potion. So I’m definitely going to purchase that. Your blog is too cute BTW xxx

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 12:46

Thank you so much for the compliment, Simônè! :)

  2. Carmen 18 March 2015 / 15:00

OMG the day I bought my LA Girl Pro BB cream the first person I though of was you. I was so scared to buy it because of my sensitive skin but I could fing the sorbet bb cream in my shade and just happen to pass Dischem and it was on display in the front of the shop. I grabbed a colour and ran (I paid R49,99 for mine). I got home said a little prayer and applied. I have not stopped using it since I bought it about 2 weeks ago. Im hoping to get my hands on a palette.

As for the whipped cream products…. I have to have them. They both sound amazing!!!!!.

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 12:48

Haha! So happy to hear you thought of me when you bought it, it’s a great little BB cream!

Anything whipped is a winner in my book! 😉

  3. simone 18 March 2015 / 15:01

    Yay. ..A favourites post!!

I can imagine that L’occitane hand cream… I so want to get my hands on it! no pun intended…ha ha

Yip. .can’t find those palettes at dischem. have been to 2 stores!

I will definitely be trying that bb cream! I am sick of spending hundreds on foundation and it never matches my skin when I get home.

great post…and yes…let’s call it a mid month favourites post. lol

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 12:50

The hand cream is just perfection – I keep it in my handbag and I’ve almost run out, so will have to stock up on another 1 or 3 before the collection is gone! :)

Don’t worry – I’ll have my giveaway blog post up soon & perhaps you’ll be the lucky winner of the L.A. Girl Nudes palette… 😉

I have the exact same issue, I own so many foundations & BB creams but only a select few match my skin tone perfectly.

      • Simone Cameron 25 March 2015 / 08:40

What do you do with the ones that don’t match?

I tried to mix Double Wear with Clinique the other day….i got my ratios completely wrong and it was a disaster. lol. I may try again and see if it works. One is too dark and one is too light. Glad to know I’m not the only one with this problem though…he he. Thought I was a major moron for choosing the wrong shades so many times.

  4. Bianca 18 March 2015 / 15:03

Loving the L.A Girl Pro Concealer you raved about – thanks for introducing it to us! It seriously rivals the higher end concealers that I’ve used – feels so good to not have to splurge on all beauty purchases. Quite satisfying when you can get something that is pretty darn good for a fraction of the price – love a bargain just like you! Going to try this BB cream – thanks for the recommendation!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 12:51

That concealer has a very special place in my heart, it is just SO GOOD for the inexpensive price. :)

You’re welcome, Bianca, and thank you for taking the time to pop onto the blog. x

  5. Siobhan Hughes 18 March 2015 / 15:23

You must know how I searched high and low for that LA Girl Nudes palette. I even put up on Facebook that anyone who could find it would get their money back and a batch of cupcakes (I have a little part time baking business haha). Eventually one of the ladies at Dischem tracked one down for me and had it delivered to my local branch, but I then found another one in the little side compartment of the display, and bought that one too for my best friend. We ADORE them!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:16

      Ooooh yum! Cupcakes…. *drool*

You are such a great best friend, you gals are lucky to own 2 of these Nudes palettes – I’m SO glad I managed to get my hands on the palette when it just came out. I think it’s sold out pretty much everywhere now… :)

  6. Missy 18 March 2015 / 15:35

Definitely want the LA Girl Nude Palette….

Been searching our Dischems high and low they have smokey eye but no Nude :-(

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:17

It was quite difficult to get hold of it right from the start, 4 palettes per store is not a lot at all… I’ll be hosting the giveaway for the palette in the next 2 or 3 weeks – so don’t fret, maybe you’ll be the lucky winner! :)

  7. Pietrie Morton 18 March 2015 / 15:35

    Ah yay!! BB cream dream!

Also couldn’t find the Sorbet BB Cream… would you say the LA Girl is your new fave between the two?
I use the Garnier & Catrice BB Creams currently since I only need light to medium coverage, with skin that is prone to shine in the T-zone i prefer these to foundations especially liquid ones. Buuuuut you rave about the Loreal True Match and I’m so intrigued to try it for those special occasions. So adding both the BB Cream & True Match to my list!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:21

Yep, I would definitely say the L.A. Girl BB cream is my current favourite between the two. I still have a lot of love in my heart for the Sorbet BB cream, but I am using the L.A. Girl one ALL THE TIME these days…

The Garnier BB cream is also pretty darn awesome, I use the original during the colder Winter months when my skin isn’t that oily. I haven’t tried any of the Catrice BB creams, will check them out next time I’m at Dis-Chem. 😉

Ooooh, True Match is the bomb…it gives a bit more coverage than a BB cream, for those days when you need it.

  8. Prettiful Blog 18 March 2015 / 16:22

I am also loving DCT recently, had a weird reaction to something, and it was the only thing that helped!

I was also loved the REN. REN press drops make me happy! There is a new product that is going to be released in the US soon, it is a sleep in night mask, I cannot wait!

Anywhooo, thank you for clearing up the scent, I couldn’t place it, I wrote in my post that it smelt heavenly, but I couldn’t place it, hahahahaha!

And totally agree on the LA bb, unfortunately I couldn’t get my hands on a palette, all sold out, everywhere, sigh! Why they only got four each is beyond me

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:26

I have a feeling DCT is going to be the ONLY lip treatment I’ll be using this Winter… :)

I love a good overnight mask, so looking forward to that releasing soon! I love the REN Rosa Centifolia scent, it’s so comforting…yet yummy too!

I don’t think Dis-Chem knew the palette would be such a favourite & sought after item, perhaps they’ll bring it back at some stage and will hopefully import lots & lots. 😉

  9. Lalannie 18 March 2015 / 17:01

I have purchased the L.A. Girl Pro BB Cream about 2 weeks on your recommendation and it has been my daily bb cream since then. I just cant seem to find the L.A. Girl Beauty Brick Nudes Eyeshadow Palette but will keep on searching!! Thanks for these reviews as it definitely takes the mystery out of buying beauty products.

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:27

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog post & leave a comment, Lalannie. :)

  10. Lalannie 18 March 2015 / 17:01

And that ‘Emma Rose Blue Background’ PJ set looks simply heavenly!!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:27

I need to purchase a set ASAP! 😉

  11. Debra 18 March 2015 / 17:31

Goodness, you make me want to go out and buy everything!! :)

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:27

      Haha! Love it, Debra! 😉

  12. Zee Mohlapi 18 March 2015 / 17:34

I’ve said it so many time before: Your photos are just perfection, Lu.

I hope the LA Girl BB cream is available in dark shades because I want to try it so bad now after reading your review. And the lipidol shower oil sounds good too, especially since we are heading towards winter.

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:28

Thank you so much, Zee. :) If I remember correctly, they did have 1 or 2 dark shades in the collection, I’m sure you’ll find a suitable shade. x

  13. alissa 18 March 2015 / 17:54

Those exfoliating beads from Tous Le Jours look so cool!!! Defs placing an order for a PJ set and some of their skin care products, love that its made in SA. 😀

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:29

      Such a unique product – I love it! :)

  14. Samantha 18 March 2015 / 19:36

Oh wow definantly going get some of these!! Thank you!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:29

      You’re welcome, Samantha. :)

  15. daisyperson blog 18 March 2015 / 19:42

Only four!!!!! That is really really sad as I didn’t get one, but also kind of cool for the select few that managed to get their hands on it.

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:30

Only four….I don’t think they knew just how much us South Africans would love the palette, especially since we can’t really get our hands on the Urban Decay palettes. 😉

  16. Vanessa 18 March 2015 / 19:55

Oh I can literally smell that hand cream and the whipped hair treatment, definitely adding them to my shopping list!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:30

Yay! I hope you love them as much as I do, Vanessa. 😉

  17. Melissa ❀ 18 March 2015 / 19:56

Looking forward to the Nudes palette giveaway!!! I didn’t manage to find one so will hopefully win the prize 😉

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:31

The blog post will hopefully be up within the next 2 or 3 weeks, I still have a few giveaways to do before then though… 😉

  18. Nicole Bekkers 18 March 2015 / 21:42

It takes a lot for me to deviate away from Paul Mitchell (I suffer from an addiction)… BUT this milkshake business looks interesting! Just browsed the website and had to hyperventilate into a bag with all the excitement. Going to try the travelsize pack and see. Thanks for this post!! By the way… I will crown you queen of all bloggers if you can track down the new Paul Mitchell marula oil line. Ive searched EVERYWHERE!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:33

Gosh, I am DYING to get my hands on the rest of the Milk_Shake range… Yum!

Great idea, try the travel size pack first to see how your hair likes the products – they are quite nourishing, so extremely oily hair may night like the products as much… I have oily roots and dry ends, so only apply this mousse from mid-length to ends.

I’m on it! Will let you know if I manage to track the range down… 😀

  19. Marisha Naidoo 18 March 2015 / 21:56

I need that Beauty Shot and Blistex lip treatment in my life – thank you for always inspiring and enabling us to buy new beauty products! Your blog is da best! XO

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:34

Thank you so much for your sweet words, Marisha. :) x

  20. Dee 18 March 2015 / 23:43

Love your photos and way of writing, you reallt gave a special talent, Luzanne. :)

I need to get my hands on that Beauty Shot from REN because my skin beeds it, and the lipidol shower oil. Looks and sounds lovely…. Also keen for the BB cream. You are so bad for my bank account hehe!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:34

Thank you so much for popping by the blog, Dee. :)

  21. Arleen 19 March 2015 / 09:40

I follow a lot of blogs and yours in one of the few that I read word for word. Keep up the great work!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:35

You just totally made my day with this comment – thanks so much, Arleen! 😀

  22. Anina 19 March 2015 / 10:13

Ag aarde, Anina is al weer oppad Dischem toe – dankie Luzanne! :-)

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:36

      Bwahahaah!!! :) 😉

Jy is definitief baie gelukkig, net 4 per winkel is ongelooflik min stock! Ek dink nie Dis-Chem het besef net HOE mal ons beauty girls oor die palette gaan wees nie – haha!

Ek wens ek kon royalties verdien!! 😉

  23. Tjoppie 19 March 2015 / 10:31

All the products sounds great! Would like to try the LA Girl Pro HD BB cream, would it be enough for a more mature skin? Great post and lovely photos!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:37

It will be lovely for mature skin, it gives the skin a natural finish and yet still hydrates quite well. You can also build the coverage where you need it most and doesn’t start to look cakey at all. :)

  24. Abby 19 March 2015 / 10:44

Ahhhh! I need to get my butt to a Dischem (wish there was one closer to me) and try something from LA Girl. Everyone is raving about it and the prices are so darn affordable.

XoXo One Stiletto At A Time

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:38

You definitely need some L.A. Girl in your life, Abby! :)

  25. safiyya 19 March 2015 / 14:31

Hi, Luz hope you are well, I love that LA Girl Pro H.D range is soo affordable and also of good quality. I have the pro HD powder, the eyeshadow primer and the BB Cream and honestly the BB cream gives my super expensive Bobbi Brown Bb cream a run for its money. I went back to my dischem to purchase a backup if in case they run out of stock. I seriously love that beauty products have become soo affordable and of good quality. I just wish it was like that when I was in school.

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:41

Hi, Saffiya – I’m going to try get my hands on the HD Powder after reading this comment. I purchased the HD Pro Primer pencil about 2 weeks ago but haven’t started testing it as yet (but I have a feeling it’s going to be a winner too!).

You are 100% correct – it feels so good to get my hands on affordable, great quality makeup at the drugstore. It definitely wasn’t the case back when I was in high school… 😉

  26. yolandi 20 March 2015 / 00:55

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:45

Thank you so much, Tyler Leigh! xox

  27. Adel 20 March 2015 / 09:21

I can’t believe I missed out on that Nudes palette! BOOOO. I haven’t been out shopping in over a month, so it’s obviously the beauty universe punishing me for not buying anything in way too long. hahaha. Oh well, I’ll make sure I enter your giveaway! This post featured some really lovely looking products, I’m definitely going to try the BB cream, if I can find one in my shade (think somewhere between Porcelain and Casper the friendly ghost :p ) xx

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:47

Bwahahaha! Loved reading this comment, Adel! 😉

The lightest shade in the BB cream range is fortunately quite fair but not sure if it’s ‘Casper fair’…

      Happy Monday! xo

  28. Cassidy Taylor-Memmory 22 March 2015 / 18:27

Totally LOVE the nudes palette and def going to try the BB cream – great post!

    • Luzanne 23 March 2015 / 13:47

Hi there. Just wanted to let you know that I happened to fall upon your blog by searching for a review on the Yardley CC cream and kinda got addicted to your posts x_x Been looking for a makeup blogger/youtuber from SA for a while and glad I found you! Simply loving your entries! Thanks!

Hi Luzanne. I just want to say I really like your blog.

I bought the LA Girl PRO conceal my local Dischem after I saw your review on it and now after reading your review on the LA Girl BB Cream I’m going to get it as well.
Its hard to find a BB cream for deep skin tones in SA but I think I might hit home run with this one.

    Keep up the good job…

Great overview! CAn I ask what shade you bought in the LA BB? And do you know your MAC shade (or any other common found/TMBB, for reference? TIA!♥
