Spring is upon us and I can’t be more excited! My garden will be in full bloom soon, and that means there’s an instant pick-me-up outside whenever I glance out the window. Spring is also the time I start eating healthier again, more salads, steamed veggies and lots of water – after pigging out on comfort food during the cold & dreary Winter months.
I’ve mentioned on the blog before, when I think of Spring, the first thing that pops into my mind is: Pastel colours. Spring collections (whether they’re makeup or nail products) usually feature pastel shades of some sort. And we all know pastel shades are my favourite shades.
The new Essie Hide & Go Chic Collection for Spring 2014 will be making its way to the stores this month, so if you see a couple of shades today that tickle your fancy, you’ll be able to get your hands on them pretty soon!
Today I have 5 of the 6 Essie Spring 2014 nail polishes to show you, I was very fortunate to receive these from Essie South Africa about a week ago. The Essie Hide & Go Chic Collection for Spring 2014 collection is inspired by the fashion world. Surprising combinations, power pastels, oversized prints, get in the fashion game with 6 irresistible and playful shades dedicated to women everywhere who aren’t afraid to play – in life and in style. Four of the polishes are pastel shades (muted pastels), and 2 brighter shades have been thrown into the mix for an added punch!
Hide & Go Chic is the collection’s namesake and what a beautiful blue shade it is! I would describe this as a creamy azure blue shade – I own A LOT of Essie nail polishes (well, I own a lot of nail polishes. Period.) and I don’t own a single dupe for this shade. If you think this shade looks similar to Sally Hansen Pacific Blue, then you are so wrong. Pacific Blue is brighter and more royal blue, Hide & Go Chic is a rich, yet muted deep blue shade. Hide & Go Chic wins ‘best formula’ in the collection as it requires only 2 coats for full coverage and isn’t streaky in the least.
Truth Or Flare is a dusty, grey-blue shade with a jelly-like consistency. When built up to three coats it gives a beautiful glossy colour, that reminds me of Essie Parka Perfect from the Winter 2014 collection, in that it changes colour ever so slightly in high-lighted areas. It looks like a true pastel blue shade in bright areas and then changes to a dusty blue shade with grey undertones in low light areas.
Fashion Playground is one of my favourite shades from the collection – it’s a minty green creme shade with a touch of silver shimmers. I get the same vibe from this polish – it changes colour in bright vs. low light areas. It is a bright-ish minty green shade in high light areas (the shimmers are hardly noticeable once applied to the nails) and then changes to a dusty, grey-toned sea foam green colour in the shade. It’s a bit on the sheer side, so 3 coats are needed for full opacity.
Romper Room is a pale, tea rose pink shade – very similar to Essie Fiji but a shade lighter and a little bit warmer in tone. These types of pink shades always stand out to me since they look stunning on both light and dark skin tones. Romper Room needs 2 thick coats for full opacity and is a breeze to apply since it’s one of those self-levelling nail polishes (not streaky at all).
Spin The Bottle (love the name by the way) is a semi-sheer nude cream shade. If you are in the market for a neutral nude shade (not too pink-toned, and not too yellow-toned), then this shade is for you! Spin The Bottle requires 3 thin coats for full opacity and since it is on the sheer side, it does apply a little bit streaky. But the third coat usually evens everything out.
The 6th shade in the Hide & Go Chic collection is called Style Hunter – it’s a gorgeous red raspberry shade. I’ve heard it is AMAZING in terms of formula and only needs 1 coat for full opacity (but don’t quote me on that).
Here are swatches of the nail polish shades (no top coat), the photos below was taken in natural daylight but not direct sunlight.
You can see the shimmers in Fashion Playground are not really noticeable.
Romper Room makes my heart happy!
The Hide & Go Chic collection is quite interesting, it combines brights and pastels in a way that works for Spring. The pastel shades are more muted than I anticipated but I understand why Essie did this because not all collections can (nor should) be candy-coloured pastels.
The collection polishes will be available at selected Clicks & Foschini stores & will retail for R 118,95 per polish.
