A lot of ladies have asked me to keep doing these ‘Currently…’ posts on a regular basis, so today I’m back with another one! I am particularly excited about today’s blog post because I have a fab prize to give away to one lucky Pink Peonies blog reader. If you’re not sure what these ‘Currently…’ blog posts are about, take a look at the first one I published a couple of months ago.
I enjoy writing these posts because I get to share more lifestyle type things with you. Beauty and makeup will always be my number 1 passion, but we all have interests outside of the realm of beauty…right? I’m enjoying watching daily vlogs on YouTube a lot more these days because I get so see my favourite beauty YouTubers in a completely different setting. What they like to eat, how they spend their days, what they like to do during their ‘downtime’ etc. lt’s always nice to see what else someone gets up to in their daily lives. So, see these ‘Currently’ blog posts as an insider’s view of what is currently going on in my life – what I’m eating, what’s on my ‘To Buy’ list, what TV show I’m loving, the current book I’m reading etc.
Speaking of books, the book I mention in my last ‘Currently…’ blog post was a total letdown – it was kinda boring. The storyline did mess with my head for a short while, but then the ending was so weird and frankly just downright disappointing.
Let’s take a look what’s been happening in my life lately:
CURRENT PRODUCT FIND:
During Winter, I tend to switch over to more oil-based skincare products i.e. cleansing oils (like this one), oil serums (like this one) and face oils. I’ve featured a number of face oils on the blog already (check out this blog post and this blog post) because I really do feel they work wonders for my thirsty skin. I have combination skin…so using a facial oil might sound rather counterintuitive, BUT using an oil-based skincare product can actually help balance the natural oils in your skin. The L’Oréal Extraordinary Rebalancing Facial Oil (R249,95) is a new addition to my skincare routine (it recently launched in South Africa, you can read about it in this blog post) and I’ve been loving it so far.
The impressive ingredients list boasts 8 refined and purified oils including Chamomile, Lemongrass, Green Oregano, Citronella, Lavender, Rosemary, Clove and Melissa (Lemon Balm Balm) oils, plus it contains no mineral oil. You can use this morning and evening, but I personally prefer to only use it as part of my night time skincare routine. I’ve been testing this for the past 2 or 3 weeks and I’ve already noticed a difference in the texture and appearance of my skin. During the colder months my skin tends to start looking a bit dull & lacklustre, but since adding the L’Oréal Extraordinary Rebalancing Facial Oil to my skincare routine, my skin feels more supple & toned, and looks more radiant. Even though this is an oil, it feels incredibly lightweight on the skin and absorbs almost instantly (3 drops is all you need to cover your entire face and neck area). This specific variant is designed for combination and oily skin, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s suitable for any skin type. If you have normal or dry skin, this facial oil will also create the perfect base for your foundation to glide on. I love the herby aromatic scent of this rebalancing oil, and I find it’s the perfect soothing scent to help me drift off to the land of nod.
If you are in the market for a facial oil that is available at the drugstore (Clicks and Dis-Chem), then I suggest you check the L’Oréal Extraordinary Rebalancing Facial Oil out.
I think my eyebrow game is relatively strong – considering the fact that I’ve had to fill them in for the last 10+ years, I should be a pro by now! I’m always on the hunt for new and exciting brow products, most of them usually turn out to be duds and I always find myself going back to my ultimate favourite brow pencil of all time: MAC Lingering Brow Pencil. When Billion Dollar Brows first launched in South Africa about a year ago, I was ecstatic. I’ve read so many rave reviews, and was keen to get my hands on 1 or 2 of their products. When I saw the price of the products, I hesitated, and decided to hold off until I had some extra cash to spend on extra brow products. Months and months (and months) passed, and I eventually decided to take the plunge. I looked for the best deal, and found the Billion Dollar Brows Best Sellers Kit on Takealot.com for R482,00. I know it sounds like a lot of money, BUT when you consider what’s included in the kit, then it’s actually a very good deal.
The kit contains the BDB Universal Brow Pencil (R269,00), BDB Clear Brow Gel (R249,00), BDB Duo Pencil (R269,00), BDB Smudge Brush (R179,00) and a pencil sharpener. Add all of that up, and the total value of the kit is = R966,00! Which means you get a 50% discount when you buy the kit. Unfortunately the kit isn’t available on Takealot.com at the moment, but there are other Billion Dollar Brow products available. You can also purchase the Billion Dollar Brows Best Sellers Kit online at Retail Box, but it’s a bit more expensive (R549,00).
I haven’t had a chance to test the products as yet, but I’m very intrigued by the ‘Universal Brow Pencil’ because it kind of takes the guesswork out of colour matching. It’s a universally flattering taupe-y brown shade that varies in intensity depending on how hard you press down. I’ll start testing everything in the kit tomorrow, and will report back soon.
To say that Neal and I are obsessed with The X-Files, is an understatement. I remember watching the first episodes when I was in primary school, and most of them scared the living daylights out of me! For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a huge fan of thriller and horror series / movies and so The X-Files was right up my alley. When Season 10 of The X-Files aired in South Africa a few months ago, my love for the TV show was rekindled. I couldn’t really remember any of the previous season episodes (Season 9 ended more than 12 years ago), so Neal and I decided to start watching from the very beginning again. The only episode that stuck with me after all these years was the episode in Season 1 with the ‘Liver Man’. Yuck!
At the beginning of March, Neal and I started with Season 1 and we’ve been watching 1 or 2 episodes every night before we go to bed. On lazy weekends we usually have an ‘X-Files Marathon’ where we’ll watch 4 or 5 episodes in a row – it’s awesome! I’ll be so sad when we get to the end of Season 9, but fortunately so far we’re not even halfway through all the seasons yet. If you’re not sure what The X-Files is about (believe it or not, there are people who have never even heard of this TV series), then take a look at this article.
I have been LOVING my Smashbox Step-By-Step Contour Stick Trio lately (I used them in this blog post), these 3 creamy pencils make bronzing, contouring and highlighting a total breeze. We all know sculpting the face can be quite tricky, the key is to define and shape the face without overdoing it. It’s easy to go a bit overboard with the bronzer / contour and then there’s always the added risk of not blending the powder products out as much as you should. The beauty of this trio is that you can be precise when drawing them on the areas you want to highlight or contour, and then blend them out (you can use a damp sponge, a makeup brush, or even your fingers). The creamy gel-like texture of the pencils glide on to the skin with such ease, and blend out like an absolute dream. I apply these directly from the pencil (after foundation but before powdering) and then blend them out with my trusty beautyblender makeup sponge. If you are a newbie to the contouring & highlighting makeup trend, or if you struggle with placement and blending of sculpting products, then this is definitely the kit for you!
Now that I’ve given you a short review of the Step-By-Step Contour Stick Trio that I already have in my makeup collection, let’s move on to the product(s) I want to ADD to my collection. The Smashbox Color Correcting Sticks – I am holding thumbs these will arrive in South African soon, because if they’re anything like their siblings, then we’ll get along famously. There are 4 shades available: Green (to neutralise redness), Purple (to brighten up sallowness or yellowness), Peach (to conceal and illuminate dark circles in lighter skin tones), and Orange (to conceal and illuminate dark circles in medium to dark skin tones). According to Smashbox, the formula is infused with moisturising Vitamin E and each pencil helps to blur the appearance of imperfections. These probably won’t be sold in a kit like the Contour Stick Trio, but rather individually so suit your personal needs.
I have a confession to make: I often skip breakfast (well, I used to). Not that it’s an excuse, but I often get so busy with replying to emails and blog work in the morning, that I forget to take time to eat something. We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and when you really think about it – how long does it actually take to pour some cereal into a bowl, add some milk and drop in a spoon. No time at all!
Lately I’ve been trying to eat healthier and be more consistent with my meals every day, in the past I’d often skip breakfast AND lunch because I would get so busy. You know how it goes…you start with your work at 8h00 in the morning and when you look at the time again, it’s 15h00. Then you get hit by that afternoon slump, and you’re basically dead to the world for the rest of the day. That’s not very productive, now is it?
About a month ago I received an email from Bokomo Nature’s Source introducing me to their new resealable ziplock packaging with a sleek & modernised look, and honestly, that email came at the perfect time. I had just made the decision to really start taking care of my body (I’m even considering joining the gym!) and when they offered to send me some of their mueslis AND host a fun giveaway with me, we’ll let’s just say I was very excited. Neal is very good when it comes to eating breakfast, and so for the past 3 weeks we’ve been taste testing various Bokomo Nature’s Source muesli options.
What are the nutritional benefits of muesli? Muesli typically has less sugar and calories than most breakfast cereals on your local supermarket shelf – it’s a potent source of antioxidants, high in fiber and whole grains (which regulate the digestive system), it provides a healthy source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids (if the muesli contains nuts) and mueslis are known to be filling so it can aid in weight loss too.
My personal favourite so far is their ‘Luxury’ range, which in my opinion is the Rolls Royce of their product range. There are 2 flavours that currently hold top spot for me – their Strawberry & Yoghurt Muesli, which contains rolled oats, toasted rice, yummy yoghurt chips, and dried strawberries (amongst other ingredients); and their Tropical Cluster Muesli, which contains banana chips, raisins, dried pineapple pieces, hazelnuts, dried papaya pieces, and almonds.
Neal is an avid mountain biker, so he’s loving their ‘BeneFIT’ range (the Swiss Cereal Muesli in particular) which is marketed as their healthier breakfast granola option. He needs sustained energy for his mountain bike rides and races, so the rolled oats, toasted wheat flakes, barley flakes, nuts, seeds and fruit (apricot, banana, apples & raisins) definitely help with that.
Since we have like 10 bags in the house at the moment (don’t worry, I haven’t opened all of them), I’ve had to think of unique ways to incorporate Nature’s Source mueslis in our diet – we eat them as our daily brekkie, I use them to make muesli bars and / or muffins (a healthy late-afternoon snack), plus I’ve even added a scoop of the ‘Nutzy Crunch’ one to my smoothies.
The Nature’s Source ‘Crunch’ range is available in 750g and 1kg packs, while the ‘Luxury’ and ‘BeneFIT’ ranges are only available in 750g packs. They have a shelf life of 9 to 12 months depending on the range, (not that they’ll last that long in our house, they’re way too delicious) and retail for R39,99 to R54,99 depending on the product.
To CELEBRATE their new packaging, Nature’s Source has offered to sponsor a giveaway here on the blog. One lucky Pink Peonies blog reader will win a Nature’s Source Muesli Hamper to the value of R250,00 PLUS a R250,00 Sorbet Salon Voucher. Why not treat yourself to a Sorbet Power Mani? With the dry & cold weather we’ve been having here in Gauteng, my nails are in dire need of some TLC. So a manicure is definitely what I would spend my voucher on!
