Currently… #1

Currently 1

During the past few months I’ve seen a couple of these ‘Currently’ blog posts pop up on some of my favourite blogs.  I like the idea of them, they’re a great way to summarise what’s currently going on in your life.  New product discoveries, current favourite TV show, something you’ve purchased recently…things like that.  It’s not really a ‘favourites’ blog post, because some of the headings are ‘Current Purchase’ (which might be a product that turned out to be a disappointment) and ‘Current Confession’.  A blog post like this gives me the opportunity to show you what I’ve been loving lately, not just beauty-related things but lifestyle goodies as well.  Feel free to play along in the comment section below and let me know what you’ve been enjoying lately.

Here goes!

Wedding Anniversary

I celebrated my birthday on the 8th AND on the 25th of February Neal and I will celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary.  I have no idea what I’m going to get him as an anniversary gift (I’ve left it a little bit late, haven’t I?) – I might get him new mountain bike riding shoes or gloves.  Gosh, he is so difficult to buy for because whenever I ask what he wants for his birthday / Christmas / anniversary, it’s always: “Well…I don’t know…”  We actually prefer doing something together, rather than just buying a gift, so I might book us both in for a spa day as well…

Skinny Brew Teatox

I was sent a Skinny Brew 28-day Teatox loose team mix towards the end of last year and didn’t use it right away as I wanted to keep it until after the festive season.  I tend to let loose whenever we go on holiday, and so I knew that I would probably want to do some type of detox in January.  I’ve done a 5-day juice detox in the past (which was very challenging) and thought something like Skinny Brew would be perfect, since it’s not a strict detox programme.  It’s basically a 100% natural tea that contains ingredients such as chamomile flowers, green tea, hibiscus flowers, juniper berries, licorice root, peppermint leaves, psyllium seeds, and cinnamon to not only cleanse the body but also give you a natural boost.

My 28-day can is pretty much empty, and although I didn’t notice a huge difference in terms of weight loss, I did notice feeling less bloated and less lethargic.  Skinny Brew Teatox is green tea based (not my favourite tea to drink), so most days I added a little bit of honey and a squeeze of lemon to add a bit of zing and sweetness.  I’ve also been drinking it as a cold iced tea (is it just me or has this been the hottest Summer we’ve had in a long time?) – just brew it the night before, and chill in the fridge.  If you’re interested, you can buy yours in the Skinny Brew online store.

MAMBI Happy Planner

I have been loving my MAMBI Happy Planner lately – planning my week ahead on a Sunday afternoon has become something I look forward to each week.  I decorate each week with a different style of planner stickers and washi tape, and add all my daily To-Do’s / appointments / beauty events & launches / birthdays etc.  It makes me feel like I’m on top of things a lot more, and my mind is less ‘fuzzy’ (if one could call it that) because I don’t have to keep remembering all the things I still have to do.  Which means I can concentrate on my blog posts, plus there’s nothing quite like the sense of accomplishment I feel when I tick off all those To-Do’s at the end of each day.  I purchased my Happy Planner on sale here, and had it delivered via Aramex Global Shopper.

MAMBI Happy Planner Peony

Me And My Big Ideas is launching their new Happy Planner designs for 2016-2017 in March, and I already have shark eyes for the peony design.  I like that their planners run from July to December the next year (18 months), plus they are a lot more affordable than Erin Condren planners.  Oh, and their pages are removable too, very user-friendly (especially since I’m a lefty).

I am loving the ‘Fight Song’ from Rachel Platten – it gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it.  I heard it on the radio a few months ago and I was like: “YEAH!  This is my life right now!”  Whenever I’m having a really crappy day, or I’m feeling anxious or down-in-the-dumps, I blast the ‘Fight Song’ on my iPod and it instantly picks me up.  Plus…after watching the music video, I have total #hairenvy.  Rachel’s hair is so messy, so beachy, so perfect.

The Grownup Gillian Flynn

Ok, so strictly speaking I haven’t started reading this book yet.  I’ve been a bit too busy to take a couple of hours to myself and read, but I will start reading ‘The Grownup’ by Gillian Flynn very soon.  I love her books, her story lines are always interesting & unique, and there is always a surprising twist at the end.  I’ve read all 3 of her other books: Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, and Dark Places.  I also watched Gone Girl and Dark Places on the big screen (but I preferred the books).  Gone Girl is one of my all-time favourite books, and I honestly think that every misbehaving man deserves to have an ‘Amazing Amy’ in his life.

Only half-joking…

Not really…

Anyway, ‘The Grownup’ is a short book (only 79 pages) and from what I can remember it’s somewhat of a ghost story.  Have you read the book?  What did you think of it?  No spoilers, please!

The Body Shop Oils Of Life Gel Cream

I recently purchased 2 skincare products from The Body Shop.  I’ve been dying to try the new Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Gel Cream, and the Drops Of Youth Eye Concentrate.  I’ve used both products only a handful of times so far, but I’ll give you my initial first impressions of each below.

Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Gel Cream (R220,00) – I really like this, I was a little worried that it might leave my skin feeling sticky (since it is a gel cream) but I’m happy to report it feels like a lightweight moisturiser with no greasy / sticky finish.  It contains black cumin seed oil, camellia seed oil, and rosehip seed oil to revitalise and repair the skin.  The gel cream formula feels very refreshing, and also contains illuminating micro-pearls to brighten up the skin, leaving it looking fresh and dewy.  There is another variant called the ‘Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Cream’ which is more suitable for mature or dry skin, but my combo skin loves the lightweight gel cream formula.

The Body Shop Drops Of Youth Eye Concentrate

Drops Of Youth Eye Concentrate (R170,00) – I have mixed feelings about this one, mainly because I was under the impression that this is an eye cream.  Turns out I should have read the box before I purchased it – it’s actually an eye serum, which means it’s best if you apply an eye cream on top of it as well.  Here’s what I like about it: The rollerball gives both a massaging and refreshing cooling effect to the eye area, which means it’s great for morning-zombie-eyes.   The actual eye serum absorbs almost instantly, and doesn’t leave any sticky or greasy feeling behind.  In fact, my skin actually feels slightly firmer (but not tight) and smoother.  It contains Edelweiss plant stem cells, known for their skin renewal properties.  I’m not too keen on adding another step to my skincare routine, so I might be a rebel and use this as my morning eye serum (with no eye cream on top) and then use my trusty Kiehl’s Avocado Creamy Eye Treatment at night.

The Missing Series

I am LOVING ‘The Missing’ at the moment!  I started watching it by chance a few weeks ago when I scrolled through the ‘Catch Up’ section on DSTV.  The storyline is quite disturbing, but very interesting…and I find myself waiting in anticipation for the next episode each week.  I think we’re almost at the final episode, and I must admit, I’ll be sad when it ends.  I’ve heard there are talks of a second season, so I’m definitely looking forward to that!  I don’t want to give too much info on what the show is about, in case some of you want to start watching it too.

Here’s a short description of the storyline: Tony Hughes is the main character in the series, he’s the father of young Oliver who went missing in the Summer of 2006.  Tony, his wife (Emily) and 5 year old Oliver travelled from England to northern France on holiday during the FIFA World Cup.  While on their way to their holiday destination, something happens and Oliver goes missing.  Eight years later, Oliver has not yet been found, and the police have closed the investigation.  The search for his son consumed Tony’s life, and as a result the couple divorced.  Although Tony never stopped looking for his son, something happens in 2014, which makes Tony get back on track.  With the help of retired French detective, who led the original investigation, Tony starts to put the pieces together.  Will Oliver ever be found?  I have no idea…

Too Faced Peanut Butter And Jelly Eyeshadow Palette

I don’t think I need to explain why I want the Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly eyeshadow palette, right?  Take a look at this makeup tutorial video to see this baby in action – I love the makeup look Nicol Concilio came up with.  The palette was apparently inspired by the much-loved ‘Peanut Butter’ eyeshadow from the Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar Palette.  The PB&J palette contains of 9 gorgeous matte and shimmer shades featuring antioxidant-rich cocoa powder with a creamy peanut butter twist (but it doesn’t contain any actual peanuts).  Eeeeeeep!  I really want to give this palette a loving home.

Life Is Tough My Darling But So Are You

“Life is tough, my darling.  But so are you.” – Stephanie Bennett-Henry

Please let me know in the comments section below whether this is something that you would like to see more of here on the blog. I’m thinking about adding some of my own ‘Current’ headings to future blog posts i.e. ‘Current Disappointment’ (a product that I regret buying), and ‘Current Yummy’ (a food item that I’ve been loving lately) etc.

P.S. Have you entered my Lancôme La Vie Est Belle L’Absolu de Parfum giveaway?  Hhhmmmmm…?

  1. Marné 23 February 2016 / 14:55

I also like “current” posts, it’s like I’m nosy like that, I want to know what’s going on!
Please do the “Current Disappointment” posts, there’s not enough posts out there which properly describes disappointing products, but mostly just short-and-sweet-naming-and-shaming on twitter. It’s always nice to know if a product was worth the price you paid for it :)

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:35

I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the post, Marné. :) I’ll definitely do more of them, and will also include a ‘Current Disappointment’ in my next one. 😉

  2. Kelly 23 February 2016 / 15:00

Wow. Totally. Love. This. Post. It was fun, personal and sooo creative! Would definitely like to see more off this and yep, please add in the ‘current disappointment’, may just save us some cash in the future 😀 Well my current celebration was my birthday on the 14th Feb :) And a current purchase was the book, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Had to read it after reading his first book, The Kite Runner a few months ago and both were absolutely brilliant… Well I simply cannot wait for what you have in store for us next :) Happy blogging! 😀

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:36

Yay! So happy to hear that – thanks for the feedback, Kelly. 😀

Will add my ‘Current Disappointment’ to the next blog post for sure.

I will definitely check out the books you mentioned, thanks for the recommendation. :)

  3. Siobhan Hughes 23 February 2016 / 15:13

I loved this post so so much! I’ve now added products to try, signed up to Me & My Big Ideas so that I can browse and make some purchases (I’m a chronic list-maker), and put a book down on my to-read list! Also, I’m desperate for the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette too – have you seen the tutorial from Dulce Candy for it?

-Siobhan – Sugar and Spice blog

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:38

Awesome! I’m sure you will love your Happy Planner if you decide to get one.

I did see the tutorial from Dulce Candy, and I really enjoyed it too. There are a lot of PB&J makeup tutorials popping up, I can’t wait to get my hands on the little palette! 😉

  4. Camilla (Jane Wonder) 23 February 2016 / 15:42

Ooooohhhh, I still have to read Sharp Objects and Dark Places but I need to get my hands on The Grownup. I am unhealthily obsessed with ghost stories (went on a walking ghost tour in London) so that kind of story line is right up my alley!!!

    – Jane Wonder –

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:39

I also looooooove a good thriller or horror book! You should also read ‘Dark Places’, it was one of the best books I have read lately! xo

  5. Euneen 23 February 2016 / 16:28

Die post is ‘n baie oulike idee! Definitief een om mee aan te hou. :)

Hoe mooi is die Too Faced PB & J palette nie? Sooooo mooooiiiii!! ♡

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:41

Oeps!) Ek het net die Aramex New York adres ingetik en met Paypal betaal en twee dae later was die pakkie afgelewer en ontvang in New York. Nou wag ek net tot dit eeeeeendag by my uitkom. :) Sal ‘n foto op instagram sit en jou tag. 😉

  6. Lida Bruwer 23 February 2016 / 16:51

  7. Genevieve Scalf 23 February 2016 / 17:12

    Loved this!!!! Do more!

My current book that I’m reading is Aleph by Paulo Coelho (not enjoying it) and my latest purchase is the Essence Happy Girls contour palette after you blogged about it and Im loving it.

Im going to read up on that Happy Planner, it sounds like its something I will enjoy doing. I have a boring old diary and Id love to be more creative.

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:43

I will definitely do more of these – so happy to hear you guys enjoyed the blog post. 😉

Aaah, pity about the Paulo Coelho book. The only book I’ve read of his is ‘The Alchemist’ but I’m sure most people have read it since it is such a classic.

Yay for the Essence Happy Girls Are Pretty Contour Palette – it’s definitly a keeper!

  8. Lalannie Knoll 23 February 2016 / 17:12

Yes please continue with this series.

Happy planner looks so cute… wish i enjoyed journaling.
LOVE this song… this will be my 2016 mantra!!
Need to try this Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Gel Cream – was looking to try a gel cream.
And yes, life is tough… and you are definately tough, Luzanne.
Thank you for investing so much into your blog. I look forward to many more posts…

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:45

Will do! :) Thank you so much for the compliment regarding my wedding photo, Lalannie.

It’s such an uplifting song, right? I think I should listen to it again once I’ve finished replying to my blog comments. 😉

Thank you for leaving such a positive comment, I really appreciate it so much. ❤

  9. Olwethu B 23 February 2016 / 17:37

My favourite product at the moment is the Loreal Matte foundation that you made the video about, I love the finish and the colour suits my skin so well.

I really liked reading this blog post, it’s something different. Please add the disappointing product to your next blog post, I would love to see what you didn’t like.

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:45

YES! I’m so happy to hear you are loving the foundation as much as I am!

Will most definitely add a ‘Current Disappointment’ to the mix next time. :)

  10. Sandee Justus 23 February 2016 / 17:53

Yes, please do more of these “currently” posts. I like the idea of incorporating lifestyle things into it as well, it gives us a glimpse into your everyday life. :)

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:46

Thank you for popping by the blog, Sandee – will definitely continue with this new series. :)

  11. Lily 23 February 2016 / 18:11

I LOVE these types of posts, Luzanne! I do Friday Favorites, which is something similar and over on my other blog I do “currently, I am…” posts. They are so fun!
I have been obsessed with my Happy Planner, they are so cute and affordable. I they they are better than the EC planners. I love that the pages are removable, you should do plan with me videos, I would love to see how you decorate, I bet it’s so cute!
Will look into that book, I loved Gone Girl.
    xo, Lily

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:48

Thanks so much, Lily. 😀 I didn’t even know you had another blog as well!! What’s it called? Send me the link!

I am very keen to start doing ‘Plan With Me’ videos but I have no idea whether my South African readers would be interested it them since ‘planners and planner stickers etc.’ are not really that popular around here…

Thanks for visiting the blog, Lily. Sending love from South Africa! xo

  12. Kimberley 23 February 2016 / 18:25

    Love that motto!!!

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:49

      It’s a goodie! 😉

  13. Talitha ❤ 23 February 2016 / 18:36

Dis my gunsteling liedjie op die oomblik! 😀

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:49

Myne ook! Dis so empowering! 😉

  14. Altha A 23 February 2016 / 19:28

  17. Francesca Stinson 23 February 2016 / 21:58

I need the Peanut Butter & Jelly palette, those colours are gorge!

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:51

You and me both, Francesca…you and me both! 😉

  18. Clara Dinkelmann 23 February 2016 / 22:39

Ek is mal oor hierdie idee! Jy moet defnitief meer van hierdie blog posts doen, Luzanne. :) Ek geniet dit so as jy jou lesers aan nuwe produkte voorstel. 😉

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:51

Ek sal verseker meer van hulle doen – dankie vir jou ondersteuning, Clara. :)

  19. Mary-Anne 24 February 2016 / 09:05

    Loved this!

I’m currently loving one of the new Revlon mascaras (I think it’s the volume one) and a new purchase of mine is Woolworths easter eggs. 😉

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:52

Thank you, Mary-Anne. I am loving the new Revlon mascaras as well, I’m testing all of them out at the moment to do a review blog post.

Oh yum! Woolies easter eggs are the best! My favourite is the white eggs…

  20. Monique Crosson 24 February 2016 / 09:55

Love this! And would definitely want to see some more :) Fight song really does pep me up anytime. Loving Unstoppable by Sia as well and Brave by Sara Bareilles. Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic and her podcast Magic Lessons is also part of my every day at the moment :)

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:53

Thank you for the song recommendations, Monique – I LOVED the ‘Brave’ song last year as well. Will definitely go take a look at the book you mentioned, sounds interesting. :)

  21. Vannesa Kniffen 24 February 2016 / 10:08

Really enjoyed this post, pls do more. :)

    • Luzanne 24 February 2016 / 12:54

Thank you, Vanessa – will do another one soon! :)

  22. Rheba 24 February 2016 / 13:01

I’ve been feeling so bloated and tired lately, so I’m going to take a look at the Skinny Brew products. Do they have a shorter teatox option, for example 10 days?

    • Luzanne 25 February 2016 / 16:01

Great idea! I’m sure you’ll love Skinn Brew. There’s a 14-day Teatox option as well. :)

  23. Daphne 24 February 2016 / 13:15

I’m also interested in the Skinny Teatox, do you drink it in the morning or at night? Can you eat your normal food as well during the 28-day teatox?

    • Luzanne 25 February 2016 / 16:00

I drank mine at night, every second night. :)

You can definitely stick to your normal diet – but if your current diet consists of unhealthy foods, then you might notice a bigger change in your weight if you incorporate healthier foods. :)

  24. Marilet 24 February 2016 / 16:01

OOOOOH my gosh that peanut butter & jelly eyeshadow palette makes my want to cry…
You should do a blog on Korean cosmetics.. I did my thesis on cosmetic packaging design and the Koreans KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING!! The most beautiful and adorable cosmetics ever.. Take a look at brands like TonyMoly, Etude House, The Faceshop, Skinfood the list is endless..

    • Luzanne 25 February 2016 / 15:57

      I know! It’s goooorgeous! 😀

Funny you mention that, I’ve been wanting to do a blog post on Korean makeup & skincare products for almost a year now. I just need to place an online order, but I’m a bit worried the parcel will get lost in the mail. I’ll see if I can have the order sent via Aramex. :)

  25. Simone Cameron 24 February 2016 / 16:23

I enjoyed this post definitely! A cute little peek into your life :)

That peanut butter and jelly palette is STUNNING! I saw Dani use it on a tutorial on her channel (Coffee Break with Dani??) and I just love it.

YOu know I have Fight Song in me head now? he he

Also really love your motto! So true <3

    • Simone Cameron 24 February 2016 / 16:30

What I’ve been enjoying… The All in One Revlon Mascara and the Revlon quick dry spray for your nails :)

Fave show at the moment…Shades of Blue with J.Lo…actually quite good. I’m always loving The Originals. *dreamy sigh…Elijah* And reality shows…REal Housewives, Survivor and Mob wives… I love when those Staten Island girls wanna take off their shoes and knock each other’s teeth out….along with the Kardashians, it’s my guilty pleasure. lol.

Galaxy Minstrels…I call them smarties for adults. Oh. Em. Gee…. I need skinny tea in my life after eating them. Thankfully I don’t think we get it in SA….or I’d be eating it for breakfast, lunch and supper….he he.

      • Simone Cameron 24 February 2016 / 16:36

Lastly, song I’m loving…Like I’m Gonna Lose You – Jasmine Thompson version…it’s so hauntingly beautiful…..

        I’ll stop now! lol

    • Luzanne 25 February 2016 / 16:12

Thanks for popping by the blog, Simone, and for always leaving entertaining comments. 😉

I just watched Dani’s makeup tutorial, watching all these makeup tutorials make me want that little palette soooo baaaaad!

I agree – the All In One Revlon mascara is bomb!! I’m planning on doing a review on all 5 variants soon. I haven’t tried that Quick Dry Spray yet, I’ll check it out next time I’m at Dis-Chem or Clicks.

I’m also really enjoying Shades Of Blue – I think JLo is brilliant in it.

I’ve never watched the Originals – what’s it about?

I used to watch Real Housewives but I went off it because it feels like there’s aaaaalways drama, and sometimes it feels like the women create drama just for the sake of creating drama. Same with Mob Wives, I watched it once and got annoyed with all the dramatics.

Love Keeping Up With The Kardashians, though! Khloé is my fave!

I used to eat Minstrels when I lived in Scotland… Minstrels, Revels, Dib Dabs, and Polo sweeties were my jam back in the day. And that’s why I was 10kgs heavier when I returned back home after about a year. :(

  26. louise 25 February 2016 / 13:16
