Best Of Beauty 2014 – Hair Edition

Best Of Beauty 2014 - Hair Care

I finally get to share my beauty besties of 2014 with you – my holy grail items, the stand-out products I will repurchase time & time again.  I’ve been rummaging through my beauty stash for the past few days and the products I mention in these ‘Best Of Beauty’ blog posts are the cream of the crop for me.  I may or may not have mentioned some of these products in previous monthly favourites blog posts.  Sometimes when I look back on the year that has been & I think about all the products I’ve tested out and used, I realize how lucky I am that I get to share these items with you.

Let’s take a look at the hair care products that wowed me during 2014…

♥  Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask (R 350,00) – this is actually my third tub…yep, I love it THAT much.  My hair hasn’t been in the best shape in past few years and 2014 marked the year when I said:  “Enough is enough!”  No more bleaching, no more using heat tools every day & more at-home treatments.  I’ve gone back to my brunette roots so to speak (I used to be a faux blonde) and my hair is slowly but surely getting back to a healthy, shiny state.  This rich & thick hair treatment mask smells absolutely heavenly, tames my frizzy mane and leaves my hair feeling silky soft & smooth without weighing it down or causing product build-up.  Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is available online at Retail Box and Everything Hair, or in-store at selected hair salons.

♥  Kérastase Elixir Ultime Rose Millenaire (R 470,00) – as mentioned above, my hair was in very bad condition at the beginning of 2014.  I did a ‘Retail Box Haul’ blog post back in February 2014 because I had bought all 3 variants of the Kérastase Elixir Ultime hair oils when they were on sale for R 99,00 each!  I’m so thankful I did, because I haven’t stopped using these oils since…the purple version is my favourite because it’s specifically designed for fine & sensitised hair.  It’s super lightweight and can be used as a pre- or post-styling product but I like to use it only as a finishing product after I’ve straightened or curled my hair.  This hair oil adds shine, increases manageability & softness and over time has definitely also improved the health of my locks (plus it smells like a beautiful floral bouquet).  If R 470,00 is a bit steep for you, check out the Retail Box website where they are currently selling the Kérastase Soin Oleo Relax for R 285,00 here.  The Kérastase Elixir Ultime Rose Millenaire is currently only available online at Everything Hair – plus they have a promo running at the moment: Buy any 2 Kérastase products & receive a Kérastase Mousse Bouffante FREE.

♥  John Frieda Frizz-Ease Daily Miracle Treatment (R 110,00) – I’ve always been a fan of leave-in conditioners but they can sometimes weigh the hair down (especially if you have fine hair, like me).  This treatment spray from John Frieda gives hair long-lasting nourishment and acts like a detangler but is lightweight enough for even fine hair that tends to get oily quite quickly.  A few spritzes on towel-dried hair controls frizz, hydrates and also protects the hair against the harmful effects of heat styling but I still use a heat protectant too, as I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to heat damage.  A great quality hair care product and doesn’t come with a hefty price tag.  John Frieda products are available at Clicks stores.

♥  LUSH BIG Shampoo (R 195,00) – at the risk of sounding like a bad porn movie…there are two words that come to mind when I think about this shampoo from LUSH:  “Oh, yeah…”  You can read my full review on this amazing shampoo right here but the short of it is:  You need it in your life.  It adds volume (without drying out the hair), adds shine (without weighing down the hair) and gives hair a beautiful fresh & citrusy scent.  It is a sea salt based shampoo (but is nothing like those yucky and sticky sea salt sprays), so the crystals also stimulate the scalp to help with hair growth when you massage it into the roots.  BIG also contains coconut oil, organic lemon & lime and other essential oils = these all add up to create a BIG hair care hero (excuse the pun, I just couldn’t help myself)!  LUSH products are available in the LUSH online store, as well as in-store (Cavendish, V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk and Gateway).  Gauteng-based ladies & gents will hopefully be getting a LUSH store in Johannesburg soon (a little birdie has been tweeting in my ear).

♥  Schwarzkopf Bonacure Hairtherapy Time Restore Rejuvenating Serum (R 260,00) – I mentioned this hair serum in my ‘October 2014 Favourites’ blog post and I’m still loving it!  I’m almost on to my second bottle because I have been using it non-stop.  Peony extracts…that’s why I love it so much – the scent is intoxicating (a beautiful, delicate floral scent), plus it nourishes my hair from roots to tips.  This product is perfect for weak & fragile hair and stimulates the hair to produce keratins, which strengthens hair & adds elasticity.  I don’t use this every single time I wash my hair because the bottle is so small and I want this miracle treatment to last for as long as possible.  Schwarzkopf Professional products are available online at Retail Box, as well as in-store at selected hair salons.

♥  Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press (R 250,00) – I featured this thermal protectant hairspray in my ‘September 2014 Favourites’ and it’s currently the only heat protectant I’m using (best product I spent my money on during 2014).  Don’t get me wrong, I do have a few other thermal protectant products in my hair care basket but I just keep reaching for this one.  What I love most about this, is it is an aerosol – that means it’s super light on the hair and doesn’t dampen the hair when you apply it.  If there’s one thing I absolutely can’t handle, it’s when I spritz a heat protectant on my hair, only to hear my hair singe when I use a heat tool on it because it’s wet.  Hot Off The Press does an amazing job of protecting my hair against heat damage, with the added benefit of ‘holding’ my curls (it acts as a hair spray too).  I will repurchase this product time & time again and I’m so impressed with it, I want to purchase the Paul Mitchell Spray Wax and Paul Mitchell Dry Wash too!  Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press is available online at Retail Box, as well as selected hair salons.

♥  Batiste Dry Shampoo (R 64,95) – a definite must-have in my hair care routine!  If you struggle with oily roots and you’re not keen on washing your hair every day (or even every second day), then you need to get your hands this.  I’m sure most of you are familiar with what a dry shampoo is – if not, here’s the short version:  A dry shampoo usually comes in a powder spray form and soaks up oil to give you irresistibly sexy second-day hair.  It also boosts volume at the roots, plus gives texture to the hair (it will keep your bobby pins from slipping out and will prolong your hair style too).  I’ll be totally honest, I also used it to conceal my regrowth (dark roots) back when I was a faux blonde.  Fruity & Cheeky Cherry and Coconut & Exotic Tropical are my two favourite scents from the range.  Batiste Dry Shampoo products are exclusive to Clicks stores.

I hope you enjoyed the hair edition of my ‘Best Of Beauty 2014’ blog posts, next up will be bath & body products…  Can you guess which products I’ll be mentioning in that blog post?

P.S.  Wish me luck, I’m busy compiling a list of all the MAKEUP products I loved during 2014 and finding it very difficult to narrow it down to only 6 or 7 products.  Eeeeek!

You are just too bad for my bank account, Luzanne. I haven’t tried anything from Moroccanoil, Paul Mitchell or Kerastase yet (shocking I know!!) but now you have me wondering if I should bite the bullet and buy one product every month when pay-day comes…

    I think I will. 😉

    • 19 January 2015 / 22:20

Haha! 😀 Each product is definitely worth it, and I like your idea of purchasing one product each month! Very smart, Talitha! I might just do that with the other Paul Mitchell products I’m dying to try… 😉
