I don’t know if you know this about me, but I’m a total coffee addict. I do, however, try to limit myself to only 2 cups of coffee per day, otherwise I tend to bounce off the walls (plus caffeine actually exacerbates anxiety). If there’s one thing I love more than good quality coffee, it’s flavoured coffee. When I lived in Scotland a few years ago, I visited my local Starbucks coffee shop almost every single day. I loved their Frappucinos (Vanilla Bean & Caramel were my favourite flavours) and their Caramel Macchiato…perhaps a bit too much, because I gained A LOT of weight whilst living in Edinburgh. Back home here in South Africa, I tend to go for the Butterscotch Latte at Seattle Coffee or a Gingerbread Latte at Woolworths (since we don’t have Starbucks coffee shops here – boo!).
But sometimes it’s nice to make your own flavoured coffee drinks in the comfort of you own home. And that’s where Beanies flavoured coffee comes in.
Here’s what you need to know about the Beanies flavoured coffee brand:
♥ They started their flavoured instant coffee journey back in 2009 and have become market leaders in both the UK and Europe.
♥ Their coffee granules contain no syrup and no chemicals.
♥ Each cup of coffee contains less than 2 calories per cup, and is sugar free (unless you add your own sugar).
♥ Beanies coffee is instant coffee, that means it’s ready in a jiffy.
♥ There are currently 9 flavours in their range of flavoured coffees: Amaretto Almond, Chocolate Orange, Cinder Toffee, Cinnamon & Hazelnut, Double Chocolate, Gingerbread, Irish Cream, Nutty Hazelnut and Very Vanilla.
♥ All the flavours are suitable for vegetarians & vegans.
♥ Around Christmas time, Beanies usually release limited edition flavours (last year they had Mulled Spice, Christmas Pudding and Winter Warmer). Let’s hold thumbs they make their way to South Africa this December!
♥ Each bottle contains 50g of coffee and retails for R 39,99 at Checkers & Checkers Hyper stores.
Upon opening the jar, a heavenly smell fills your nostrils. Some flavours are more intense than others, and every now & again I find myself sniffing my favourite jars. You only need 1 teaspoon of coffee per cup, so the small jar will last you quite a while (depending on how many cups of coffee you drink in a day). Something else I really appreciate is that the removable foil lid (to ensure freshness) peels away quite easily – totally arb, I know. But nothing frustrates me more than having literally to perform open heart surgery just to remove the foil lid.
In terms of taste, I really quite like that the flavours are not overpowering. It’s almost like you get the taste of coffee first, with the aroma of vanilla / toffee / chocolate as more of an aftertaste. My personal favourites are: Irish Cream, Very Vanilla, Cinder Toffee and Gingerbread. I’m not a huge fan of chocolate, so the 2 chocolate-y flavours didn’t really float my boat. I’ll be passing them on to my Momma.
As mentioned, I do love me a posh & frothy flavoured coffee…so I like to heat & froth my milk before adding it to the coffee. It really does make a difference, and tastes absolutely heavenly. Trust me, once you’ve taken the extra time to froth up a bit of milk (get one of those handheld whizzing Aerolatte milk frothers), you won’t want to go back to just drinking boring ol’ regular average coffee. I also like to add a sprinkle of cinnamon spice on top!
You can also chill your premade coffee in the fridge for a couple of hours, then blend with milk & a bit of ice for a delicious flavoured iced coffee or Frappucino. Yum!
Oh! And cupcakes! Add a bit of coffee to your cupcake mix or to the frosting mix to give your homemade cupcakes a unique twist.
Some of the coffees have a stronger flavour than others, but all make a lovely, smooth cup of instant coffee.
